Partnering with Carleton\u2019s Sprott School of Business, the Centre for European Studies is pleased to present this year\u2019s Canada-Europe Business Lecture, given by Dirk Matten, Currently holder of\u00a0the Hewlett-Packard Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility\u00a0and Professor of Strategy in the Schulich School of Business at York University.<\/p>\n

Canada and many core EU member countries share a number of similarities in their approach\u00a0to assigning various social responsibilities to business. A common thread\u00a0is\u00a0seen in\u00a0the fact that both Canada and the EU traditionally assign welfare state institutions a stronger role in addressing social needs.<\/p>\n

However, over the last decade and a half, approaches seem to\u00a0have developed in different directions. Canada has taken a\u00a0path of less state involvement and lower governmental commitment to environmental goals. Meanwhile, European companies have felt a stronger need to adopt voluntary corporate social responsibility (CSR). Particularly in their non-European operations, it was notably the EU Commission and a number of member states who took considerable action recently to encourage more CSR in business. These measures have raised\u00a0expectations toward the private sector considerably.<\/p>\n

This talk will explore the similarities and differences between the Canadian and European approach to CSR. It will also assess these varying approaches in the context of the ongoing financial crisis and the current debate on climate change and the role of business.<\/p>\n
