The CES is pleased to welcome Dr. Feyzi Baban, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at Trent University.<\/p>\n

Since the 1960s, the relationship between Turkey and the European Union has followed a long and difficult trajectory. The declaration of official candidacy status in 2005 marked a high point between Turkey and the EU, however that process is currently at a standstill which is reinforced by the ongoing financial crisis in Europe and also by Turkey\u2019s desire to reorient itself within the larger global political configuration. Even though the relationship between Turkey and the European Union is at a difficult crossroads, the accession process has had a significant impact both on Europe\u2019s self image and Turkey\u2019s post-Ottoman republican ideals. This talk will explore the various dimensions of the mutual but difficult relationship between the EU and Turkey by examining the simultaneous impact of Turkey\u2019s membership on debates of postnational Europe on the one hand, and of a possible EU accession on Turkey\u2019s republicanism on the other.<\/p>\n
