In recent years, critics of Islam have become increasingly vocal in various European states. In his lecture, Patrick Bahners will analyze the position taken by these critics, arguing that their militant pseudo-liberalism undermines the very existence what they seek to protect: a liberal society. Bahners will show that Islamophobic networks in Europe extend beyond nation-state borders. Rallying publicists, bloggers and political activists, they stir up prejudice and paranoia.<\/p>\n

Patrick Bahners\u2019 bestselling book \u201cDie Panikmacher: Die deutsche Angst vor dem Islam\u201d (The Scaremongers: The German Fear of Islam) has been a major contribution to recent German debates about multiculturalism. In this lecture, Bahners will introduce his perspectives to a Canadian audience. The lecture\u00a0is the opening event of the conference \u201cInclusion\/Exclusion: European Integration and Multilevel Citizenship\u201d at the Centre for European Studies. It also marks the\u00a050th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in Ottawa.<\/p>\n

From 2001 to 2011, Patrick Bahners headed the arts and culture section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Germany\u2019s most respected broadsheet newspaper. Bahners will soon be reporting for FAZ from New York City. Before joining the FAZ, he studied history and philosophy in Bonn and Oxford.<\/p>\n
