Severin Fischer\u2019s talk will explore the <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/policies\/ets\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Emissions Trading Scheme<\/a>, a cornerstone of the EU\u2019s climate policy which may be expanded to include transatlantic aviation.\u00a0 Oliver Geden\u2019s talk will focus on the EU\u2019s controversial <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/air\/transport\/fuel.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Fuel Quality Directive<\/a>.\u00a0 Last year, a proposed revision to label oil from the oil sands as more polluting than conventional crude was tabled. That proposal is up for consideration again later this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Oliver Geden<\/strong>\u00a0is a Senior Research Fellow at the Berlin-based\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swp-berlin.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">German Institute for International\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swp-berlin.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">and Security <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/ces\/cu-events\/eu-climate-policies-emissions-trading-and-fuel-quality-directive-insights-for-canada\/geden_oliver\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5141\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5141\" title=\"Geden_Oliver\" src=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/ces\/wp-content\/uploads\/Geden_Oliver-400x537.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"107\" height=\"143\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swp-berlin.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Affairs<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0(Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, SWP) since 2006. As a member of the \u201cEuropean Integration\u201d research division, his studies mainly focus on the European Union\u2019s energy and climate policy. He received his Ph.D. from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hu-berlin.de\/?set_language=en\" target=\"_blank\">Humboldt University Berlin<\/a>, has been a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley and worked as an external expert in the Federal Foreign Office\u2019s Policy Planning Unit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Severin Fischer<\/strong>\u00a0has been working as a fellow at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swp-berlin.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">German Institute for International and Security <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5140\" title=\"Fischer_Severin\" src=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/ces\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fischer_Severin-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"174\" height=\"117\" \/>Affairs<\/a> (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, SWP) in Berlin since 2011. He has five years of working experience in the field of energy and climate policy. Between 2008 and 2011 he worked as project coordinator at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iep-berlin.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Institut f\u00fcr Europ\u00e4ische Politik (IEP)<\/a> in Berlin. During 2009 and 2010 he joined the office of the Chairman of the Environment Committee in the European Parliament as a policy adviser. Since 2010 he has also been a visiting lecturer at Friedrich-Alexander-Universit\u00e4t Erlangen-N\u00fcrnberg.
