The Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies, in cooperation with the Centre for European Studies (an EU Centre of Excellence) will be hosting a seminar by Dr. Sebastian Baglioni, a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Department of Political Science at Carleton University, entitled \u201cCatalonia: the Difficult Path Towards Independence<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Dr.Baglioni_Seminar\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Seminar\u00a0Abstract<\/strong>:\u00a0On November 9, 2014, Catalonia celebrated a referendum on independence. This was seen by many as a challenge to Spain\u2019s unity and as a strong expression of the will of Catalans to decide their own future. However the actual significance of the referendum is much less straightforward than it seems. This seminar examines the developments leading up to the referendum, the actions of Catalan political elites and the Spanish government, and the implications of the result for Catalonia and Spain. In doing so, it highlights the tensions, contradictions, and controversies at work in a seemingly failed process of independence.<\/p>\n

Biography:\u00a0<\/strong>Dr. Sebastian Baglioni<\/a> is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Carleton University, Department of Political Science. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto. His areas of expertise include theories of democracy, federalism, multinationality, and Spain and the EU. Dr. Baglioni\u2019s current research focuses on intergovernmental relations and federalism in Spain, and the institutional and political consequences of the Treaty of Lisbon.<\/p>\n
