{"id":12925,"date":"2022-01-07T15:28:57","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T20:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ces\/?p=12925"},"modified":"2022-01-07T15:36:36","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T20:36:36","slug":"new-eu-policy-brief-on-the-eus-approach-to-regulating-artificial-intelligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ces\/2022\/new-eu-policy-brief-on-the-eus-approach-to-regulating-artificial-intelligence\/","title":{"rendered":"New EU Policy Brief on &#8220;The EU&#8217;s approach to regulating artificial intelligence&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The newest Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence EU Policy Brief on regulating artificial intelligence written by Robert Gould is available to read <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ces\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gould-EU-Policy-Brief-AI.pdf\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Gould offers a succinct analysis of the background, challenges and key findings and policy implications of the European Union&#8217;s (EU) very important <em>Artificial Intelligence Act<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A52021PC0206\">AIA<\/a>) legislation brought forward in April 2021 to address a myriad of issues and most relevant to protecting its citizens&#8217; rights. He writes of the EU&#8217;s aim to address their concerns that actors outside of the EU are operating within the EU with largely unchecked digital business practices.<\/p>\n<p>With the expansion of artificial intelligence globally, the EU&#8217;s legislations bring forth a set of harmonised rules in accordance with EU&#8217;s aim to strengthen protections of its individuals and provide a foundation for compliance of businesses operating in the EU&#8217;s single market. From the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) adopted in 2016 and now recognized as a law to the regulations proposed in late 2020 which included the Data Governance Act, Digital Services Act, and Digital Markets Act as precursors to the current AIA, the EU&#8217;s comprehensive approach will provide guidance for the growing digital world.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/eurus\/people\/gould-robert\/\">Robert Gould<\/a> is Adjunct Research Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/eurus\/\">Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies<\/a>, Carleton University, Ottawa. He is an Associate of the Centre for European Studies.
