{"id":5084,"date":"2013-01-22T10:25:24","date_gmt":"2013-01-22T15:25:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/ces\/?p=5084"},"modified":"2013-06-10T13:42:37","modified_gmt":"2013-06-10T17:42:37","slug":"europe-still-a-continent-of-multiculturalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ces\/2013\/europe-still-a-continent-of-multiculturalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe: Still a Continent of Multiculturalism?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In January the Centre for European Studies hosted an event on <strong>multiculturalism<\/strong> in honor of the retirement of our Associate Director, <strong>Dr. Robert Gould<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The other participants in the event were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socio.umontreal.ca\/departement\/personnel\/Amirauxvalerie.html\" target=\"_blank\">Val\u00e9rie Amiraux<\/a>, Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.utsc.utoronto.ca\/~socsci\/triadafilopoulos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Triadafilopoulos<\/a>, University of Toronto<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the past decades, issues of <strong>migration, integration, cultural diversity, and religious pluralism<\/strong> have become major topics of political contention across Europe. In many European states, <strong>public discourse has shifted<\/strong> decisively against multiculturalism, and xenophobic (or anti-Muslim) political parties have emerged as significant political players. At the same time, cultural and religious diversity in European states continues to increase, European integration in moving into ever more sensitive policy areas (including migration), and transnational linkages across borders are growing ever more dense.
