Dr. Hayley’s research is primarily interested in exploring the biological mechanisms responsible for two different conditions that involve altered brain functioning: 1. Depression and 2. Parkinson’s disease. He has been particularly interested in how the immune system is connected these disorders and how drugs that modify inflammatory brain cells could be used as treatments. He and his colleagues have recently found specific immune system signalling molecules that affect brain plasticity (changes in old or the production of new neuronal projections or cells) might have therapeutic potential.

Dr. Hayley’s work has involved ongoing affiliations with:
Health Canada
Parkinson’s Society of Canada (as well as Ottawa and Southwest Ontario Chapters)
Ottawa Health Research Institute (University of Ottawa)
Royal Ottawa Hospital
Cellular and Molecular Medicine (University of Ottawa)
Seton Brain and Spine Institute, Austin, Texas
M.J. Fox Foundation (as grant co-applicant only)
