With Speaker: Dr. Oren Petel, Ph.D., P.Eng. Assistant Professor Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Concussion is a major contemporary health concern, with both immediate and long-term health consequences. Despite intense research on brain trauma, the field of injury biomechanics has made only incremental progress with respect to concussion prevention. This is due in part to the complexity of the brain, variations among individuals, and the nature of the injury. In this talk, the current state of experimental and computational injury biomechanics research will be discussed from a mechanical perspective, providing insights into suspected injury mechanisms for concussive and subconcussive impact. The talk will also outline current research by the Impact Dynamics Research Group at Carleton University and the first results from our unique high-speed x-ray capabilities.
