In Montreal, Hilda Bleyer enjoyed working as Head Librarian, at the trilingual Solomon Schechter Academy from 1975- 2000, during a time of discussion about the language of the Holocaust and when and how to introduce the literature of the Holocaust. At the same time, Stephen Bleyer, her late husband, started to speak out about the dangers of prejudice and intolerance, as a volunteer, and then as President of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre. Using his own story as a young Hungarian survivor of Auschwitz, he inspired young and old with his reflections. Hilda’s parents came to Canada in 1929 and learned slowly about the loss of many family members in Europe; the search for answers lives on after them. Hilda is happy to be a volunteer for CHES, a centre for study and discussion.
