Presidential & Provostial Task Force on Community Healing, Rebuilding and Belonging (CHRB)
Over the last few months, we have heard concerns from many of you about frictions and fractures within the Carleton community as a result of geopolitical tensions in various parts of the world as well as systemic issues that undermine our collective commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, academic freedom, and the excellence that it spawns.
You have indicated that these concerns necessitate a concerted rededication to working together to sustain an environment that supports mutual flourishing. You want us to ensure that these commitments are concretely manifested in our daily routines so that Carleton exemplifies a place where everyone feels they belong, is safe to learn and work, and upholds and safeguards the right of others to the same. This is because you share the view that our mission is enriched by mobilizing our unique talents, identities and lived experiences for common purpose while holding firm to shared values and the spirit of conviviality.
A commitment to the essence, ethos and unassailability of this view is what will allow us to engage with one another passionately, robustly, collegially and empathetically, even in the face of challenging situations that evoke different perspectives about interpretation and action, without degenerating into disagreeable territory.
To enable us to foster the kind of Carleton that addresses our shared concerns and reflects the kind of community that we can be proud of, we are establishing a Presidential and Provostial Task Force on Community Healing, Rebuilding and Belonging (CHRB).
We only have one Carleton University and it behooves all of us, individually and collectively, to work in concert to create the kind of environment that builds and leverages community to deliver with pride on the promise of our founding and to advance our aspirations of driving inclusive impact and prominence at home and around the world, together. We look forward to all of us supporting the Task Force in its work to get us there.
