DESCRIPTION:A public talk on the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi to the ending of indentured labour with a focus on the Caribbean.



Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1833 but indentured labour continued and was ended only in 1917. Gandhi is well-known for non-violent resistance to imperialism and untouchability. Less recognized is his pivotal role in ending indentured servitude. The College of the Humanities, Carleton University and the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Council of Ottawa present a public lecture by Hemraj Ramdath. A sought-after speaker on slavery, indentureship, and entrepreneurship, Hemraj Ramdath has addressed audiences at colleges, universities, and Global Indian Diaspora conferences worldwide. He is the author of Beyond Indentureship: Indo-Trinidadian Entrepreneurs (2023)and Iconic Brands of the Caribbean, scheduled for release on October 30, 2026.

The lecture follows a garlanding ceremony at 10:00 a.m. commemorating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at his statue in front of Richcraft Hall next to the Steacie Building on the Carleton campus.
