Description
The Carleton-Mitacs GRA offers opportunities for Carleton senior undergraduate and graduate students (Master’s or PhD), and postdoctoral fellows (PDFs) to gain international research experience through collaborative research projects with Mitacs partner institutions or at universities in eligible countries. International senior undergraduates, graduate students or PDFs from a Mitacs partner institution or eligible country are also eligible to apply to this program and conduct research at Carleton University. Carleton has 22 awards available for both inbound and outbound GRA participants.
Duration and Value
The award provides CAD$6,000 to cover travel and accommodations or research expenses. The research trips must be between 12 and 24 weeks.
Travel Restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic
Please note that travel restrictions remain in place due to COVID-19 and Carleton University has suspended its visiting researcher program as well as restricted research-related travel for its members. Currently, the university is not accepting visiting researchers to campus and not allowing students to travel for research internships. Although the Mitacs GRA program is open and students may apply for the awards, and be accepted, no travel can take place until restrictions are lifted. As a result, for successful award recipients, all travel will be on hold until further notice. Carleton International will not issue letters of invitation (for visa purposes) for inbound students or conduct predeparture orientations for outbound students at this time. All award recipients will be notified immediately once these procedures are resumed and preparations for travel can be made.
Eligibility
Carleton Applicants
Carleton senior undergraduates, graduate students, and PDFs are invited to apply. Applicants must find a supervisor at their intended host institution and work closely with their Carleton supervisor on the application form. Carleton faculty members looking to build or strengthen international partnerships are encouraged to apply to host an undergraduate, graduate student or PDF from abroad on a co-supervised research project. If successful, recipients and hosts must follow procedures for visiting researchers.
International Applicants
Senior undergraduates, graduate students or PDFs from a Mitacs partner institution or eligible country are welcome to apply. Applicants must first find a faculty member at Carleton interested in hosting them during their research visit. If successful, GRA award recipients must follow procedures for visiting researchers.
How to Apply
To apply, for both outgoing or incoming awards, please first complete the Carleton Mitacs GRA Preliminary Form and send it by email to Sylvie Jasen, sylvie.jasen@carleton.ca. Those selected will also need to complete a Mitacs application package for review and approval by Mitacs (the review takes approximately 2 months).
Application Requirement: Research Themes
Applications for the GRA must demonstrate how the proposed research project fits within one or more of the following research themes:
- Wellness and Sustainability
- Accessibility
- Aging Technology
- Refugees and Migration
- Telecommunications and Information Technology
- Northern and Indigenous Communities
- AI and Big Data
- Public Policy and Community Building
- World and Cyber Security
- Human Computer Interactions
Timeline
-
- Submit the Preliminary Form to Carleton International for pre-selection by an internal Carleton committee. Results will be sent within 2 weeks of submission.
- If successful in pre-selections, the applicant completes the full Mitacs application package (includes form with approvals, relevant CVs, support letters from supervisors, and a proposal). The package is submitted to Carleton International for preliminary review and sent to Mitacs for final review and approval. The Mitacs review will take 2-3 months.
- If approved by Mitacs, the award recipient completes Code of Conduct and Ethics and Pre-departure forms to be submitted to Mitacs. Once received, Mitacs issues the Notice of Award (NOA) to Carleton (with copies to the recipient and both host and home supervisors). The award recipient has one year to travel from the date of the NOA.
- Carleton disburses payments for both inbound and outbound awards.
For Carleton students and PDFs, the funds will be administered by their home supervisor. To facilitate payment, the supervisor must submit an approval form in cuResearch. For international visiting researchers, the funds will be administered by Carleton International upon arrival. The university will issue a cheque and the international award recipient must open a Canadian bank account.
Deadline
This is an open call with no deadline but there are a limited number of awards available.
