The Canada and Latin America Research & Exchange Opportunities (CALAREO) Consortium was formed in 2018, to support faculty and student mobility with Latin America, including exchange programs, scholarships and research collaboration. The Mitacs-CALAREO Globalink Research Award (GRA) Program provides funding to senior undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows for short research trips (3-6 months) between Carleton and select countries in Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. These research trips are to conduct student-led projects that must be completed within the timeframe of the award.
Please note that the program is closed at this time, as travel restrictions remain in place due to COVID-19 and Carleton University has suspended its visiting researcher program as well as restricted research-related travel for its members. Currently, the university is not accepting visiting researchers to campus and not allowing students to travel for research internships.
Duration and Value
The award provides CAD$6,000 to cover travel and accommodations or research expenses. The research trips must be between 12 weeks and 6 months.
Travel Restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic
Please note that travel restrictions remain in place due to COVID-19 and Carleton University has suspended its visiting researcher program as well as restricted research-related travel for its members. Currently, the university is not accepting visiting researchers to campus and not allowing students to travel for research internships. Although the Mitacs-Calareo GRA program is open and students may apply for the awards, and be accepted, no travel can take place until restrictions are lifted. As a result, for successful award recipients, all travel will be on hold until further notice. Carleton International will not issue letters of invitation (for visa purposes) for inbound students or conduct predeparture orientations for outbound students at this time. All award recipients will be notified immediately once these procedures are resumed and preparations for travel can be made.
This opportunity currently supports travel and research between Canada and Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico.
Carleton senior undergraduates, graduate students, and PDFs are invited to apply. Applicants must find a supervisor at their intended host institution and work closely with their Carleton supervisor on the application form. Award recipients must remain registered full-time during the research visit and cannot take up the award where they have previously completed a degree and/or been employed, or in a country where they hold citizenship (unless also a citizen or PR of Canada). Applicants cannot hold more than one GRA per academic lifetime or have previously held a Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program award.
Carleton faculty members looking to build or strengthen international partnerships are encouraged to nominate an undergraduate, graduate student or PDF from an eligible country for a co-supervised research project. Host and home supervisors must hold a faculty or adjunct position. If successful, recipients and hosts must follow procedures for visiting researchers.
International senior undergraduates, graduate students or PDFs from an eligible country are welcome to apply. Applicants must first find a faculty member at Carleton interested in hosting them during their research visit. If successful, award recipients must follow procedures for visiting researchers. Award recipients must remain enrolled full-time at their home institution during the research visit.
How to Apply
To apply, for both inbound or outbound awards, please first complete the Mitacs CALAREO Preliminary Form and send it by email to Sylvie Jasen. firstname.lastname@example.org. Those pre-selected will also need to complete a full Mitacs application for review and approval by Mitacs (the review takes approximately 2 months).
- Submit the Preliminary Form to Carleton International for pre-selection by an internal committee. Results will be sent within 3 weeks of submission.
- If successful in pre-selection, the applicant completes the full Mitacs GRA application package (includes form with approvals, relevant CVs, support letters from supervisors, and a proposal). The package is submitted to Carleton International for preliminary review and sent to Mitacs for final review and approval. The Mitacs review will take 2-3 months.
- If approved by Mitacs, the award recipient completes Code of Conduct and Ethics and Pre-departure forms to be submitted to Mitacs. Once received, Mitacs issues the Notice of Award (NOA) to Carleton (with copies to the recipient and both host and home supervisors). The award recipient has one year to travel from the date of the NOA.
- For international recipients, Carleton supervisors submit a Letter of Invitation Request for the visiting student researcher.
- Carleton disburses payments for both inbound and outbound awards.
For Carleton students and PDFs, the funds will be administered by their home supervisor. To facilitate payment, the supervisor must submit an approval form in cuResearch. For international visiting researchers, the funds will be administered by Carleton International upon arrival. The university will issue a cheque and the international award recipient must open a Canadian bank account.
This is an open call with no deadline but there are a limited number of awards available.
