The International Research Mobility Experience (IRME) project provides opportunities for eligible undergraduate students enrolled at a CALAREO member institution to pursue medium- or short-term research internships and field school activities in Latin America and the Caribbean under the supervision of a faculty member at either the home or host institution.

The IRME project is funded by the Canadian Government through Global Skills Opportunity (GSO), a pilot program to support outbound mobility projects for Canadian undergraduate students. Until now, few Canadian students include an international experience as part of their higher education. Among those who do go abroad, the majority go to four countries: the UK, France, Australia, and the USA. The GSO program is designed to address students’ financial concerns and other barriers preventing participation in mobility programs, in addition to promoting travel to non-traditional destinations. It also encourages participation from low-income students, students with disabilities, and Indigenous students.

CALAREO member institutions include:

  • Carleton University
  • Memorial University
  • York University
  • Lakehead University
  • Vancouver Island University

The IRME project offers the following types of mobility for summer 2023 and 2024:
