{"id":3009,"date":"2015-03-03T20:37:41","date_gmt":"2015-03-04T01:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/curo\/2015\/funding-opp-dfatd-canada-brazil-awards-joint-research-projects\/"},"modified":"2015-04-02T09:36:10","modified_gmt":"2015-04-02T13:36:10","slug":"funding-opp-dfatd-canada-brazil-awards-joint-research-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ci\/2015\/funding-opp-dfatd-canada-brazil-awards-joint-research-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"FUNDING OPP: DFATD: Canada-Brazil Awards \u2013 Joint Research Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p>The objective of this scholarship program is to support team-oriented research projects between Canadian and Brazilian universities in key areas of mutual cooperation.<\/p>\n<h3>Opportunity<\/h3>\n<p>The Canada-Brazil Awards-Joint Research Projects provide scholarships for exchanges of researchers and graduate students in support of reciprocal, team-based research projects between Canadian and Brazilian universities in key areas of mutual cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian professors who will take on the role of Project Lead are invited to submit applications for projects that engage in collaborative research in key academic areas of bilateral cooperation leading to an eventual publication.<\/p>\n<p>The Brazilian Project Lead will need to apply directly to CAPES, using the application forms and program guidelines issued by their government. This same competition is also expected to be launched in Brazil shortly. Interested Canadian institutions are encouraged to contact potential Brazilian partners before the end of December to establish communication before the Brazilian summer.<\/p>\n<p>The partners must complete the two-stage online application process by the stated deadline.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Canadian lead-professor must complete and submit the\u00a0DFATD\u00a0online application form and upload the supporting documents as requested.<\/li>\n<li>The Brazilian lead-professor must complete and submit the\u00a0application to the Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES) per its requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Eligibility<\/h3>\n<p>This competition is open to research teams from Canadian and Brazilian universities. The coordination of the project will be the responsibility of both the Canadian and Brazilian Project Leads and the teams will consist of graduate project members from Canadian institutions and PhD project members from Brazilian institutions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Canadian and Brazilian Project Leads<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>must be citizens or permanent residents of the country of their institution;<\/li>\n<li>must be active faculty members, which include Professors Emeritus and academic staff on sabbatical leave, of a recognized higher education or equivalent degree granting institution;<\/li>\n<li>must hold a degree equivalent to a postgraduate qualification (PhD) and must have held the title of doctor for at least four years;<\/li>\n<li>must be proficient in the\u00a0language\u00a0of instruction at the Canadian institution (English or French); and<\/li>\n<li>who are retired faculty members are not eligible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Canadian and Brazilian project members<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>must be citizens or permanent residents of the country their institution;<\/li>\n<li>must be graduate students \u2013 Canadian institutions may propose both Masters and PhD students with the agreement of their Brazil partner institution;<\/li>\n<li>must be enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in their country of origin and paying the tuition fees required by that institution for the full duration of the exchange;<\/li>\n<li>must be proficient in the language of instruction at the Canadian institution (English or French); and<\/li>\n<li>already participating in an exchange program in Canada or in Brazil are not eligible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Terms and Conditions<\/h3>\n<p>A submitted application must meet the following terms and conditions may not be considered for funding.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Canadian institution must be recognized by its provincial or territorial government.<\/li>\n<li>There must be a Memorandum of Understanding or written agreement between the collaborating Canadian and Brazilian institutions indicating that they intend to collaborate on the same research project and that both institutions agree to waive tuition fees for the students they are hosting. Please contact <a href=\"mailto:&#089;&#x76;o&#110;&#x6e;e.&#x43;&#x6c;e&#x76;&#x65;r&#115;&#x40;c&#097;&#x72;le&#x74;&#x6f;n&#x2e;&#x63;a\" target=\"_blank\">Yvonne Clevers<\/a> for a list of current and in-progress agreements with Brazilian institutions<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\"><\/a><\/li>\n<li>No provision will be made for released time, stipends, salaries, or overhead costs to the institution.<\/li>\n<li>Priority will be given to projects that have not received funding in previous competitions for the Canada-Brazil Award: Joint Research Projects.<\/li>\n<li>Funding cannot be deferred.<\/li>\n<li>For Canadian Project Lead and project members, travel to Brazil in the first year may commence as early as July 2, 2015 but no later than February 1, 2016 for Project Leads and no later than March 1, 2016 for project members. In exceptional cases, and with approval from DFATD, the departure date may be extended to May 13, 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Canadian and Brazilian teams:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>must be composed of up to five graduate students (excluding the Project Lead); Canadian institutions may include both Masters and PhD students with the agreement of their Brazil project partner;<\/li>\n<li>must work toward a joint peer-reviewed article or book publication from an academic publisher following the completion of the project;<\/li>\n<li>will be required to provide qualitative and quantitative reports during the scholarship period;<\/li>\n<li>must ensure that project members (graduate students)\u00a0are exempt of tuition or academic fees at the partner host institution; and<\/li>\n<li>make arrangements relating to the research project, including obtaining the necessary visa and study permits, accommodations, local travel, study\/research plans, including inter alia appointments with academics and other resource personnel, access to libraries, laboratories and other study centres, as required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The participating institutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>must agree to host the Project Members and Project Lead from the partner institution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Funding Available<\/h3>\n<p>The scholarship value is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$2,700 CAN for the Canadian Project lead for a minimum period of seven days;<\/li>\n<li>$7,200 CAN for Canadian project members for research exchanges of four months; or<\/li>\n<li>$9,700 CAN for Canadian project members for research exchanges of five to six months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Canadian project members (graduate students) can divide their exchanges into more than one trip to Brazil with the permission of their Brazilian partner. To receive the full scholarship amount, their combined exchange period must be a minimum of four months or five to six months.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian institutions will disburse funds to the Canadian project members and Project lead to cover costs including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>visa and\/or study\/work permit expenses;<\/li>\n<li>funding for the most economical round trip economy class ticket;<\/li>\n<li>funding for health insurance;<\/li>\n<li>living allowance; and<\/li>\n<li>required books, supplies, and equipment, not including computers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Canadian institutions can claim an additional $300 CAN per project member to assist with overhead administrative costs associated with the joint research project.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian institutions may include a second Canadian institution providing one institution acts as the lead institution and be identified as such in the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Additional features and funding are currently being considered to better align with the reciprocal offer by Brazil to Brazilian teams. Confirmation of additional features will be available and announced to successful Project Leads.<\/p>\n<h3>Project duration<\/h3>\n<p>Project activities should be scheduled over 24 months and must begin between July 2, 2015, and February 1, 2016. Projects may also be considered for an additional two years of funding based on merit, show of need and availability of funding.<\/p>\n<p>Indirect costs: Canadian institutions can claim an additional $300 CAN per project member to assist with overhead administrative costs associated with the joint research project.
