After Canada became a member of the World Trade Organization in 1988, it established the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the USA and Mexico in 1994. The goal of NAFTA was to eliminate tariffs on goods produced by these three countries and encourage business partnerships between them. Canada-India Relations<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Canada-India trade agreement is a bilateral trade agreement between the two countries<\/span><\/a>. Established on September 1st, 2017, this opportunity presents new business opportunities for entrepreneurs both in Canada and India. The Agreement will create new jobs and open investment opportunities for companies in both countries by increasing access to each other\u2019s markets, promoting regulatory transparency, improving the business environment, fostering innovation, and facilitating cross-border trade in services.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trade agreements between countries are in place to make things easier for your business expansion, but they\u2019re not the end-all-be-all of conducting international business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Canada-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) is a trade agreement between the two countries. It was signed on September 18, 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CECA covers goods and services, investments, technical barriers to trade, trade in services, and intellectual property rights. It will help Canadian businesses expand their operations in India and Indian companies invest in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n

The business relationship between Canada and India has been evolving for decades. <\/span>In 2019, two-way merchandise trade between the two countries was sitting at around 10.1 billion and decreased slightly down to 8.1 billion due to COVID-19<\/span><\/a>. Canada and India are finding new ways to deepen their current partnership to make it a viable opportunity for middle-class, women, youth, and indigenous to take advantage of the trade and investment relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Canada-India Tax Treaty is based on the <\/span>Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Model Tax Convention<\/span><\/a> on Income and Capital, which is a standardized model used by many countries around the world. The treaty defines what income will be taxed in each country, how it will be taxed, and what exemptions are granted for certain types of income.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since India has a higher corporate tax rate than Canada, this treaty stipulates that Indian businesses with subsidiaries in Canada will not be subject to Indian taxes on their Canadian profits. This means that there is no need for Indian companies to pay taxes twice on their profits.<\/span><\/p>\n
