In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/45-28-0001\/2021001\/article\/00042-eng.htm\">Statistics Canada<\/a> reported that 38% of nonprofits anticipated challenges in recruiting skilled employees, while 33% expected difficulties in retaining staff. A study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/theonn.ca\/publication\/2022-state-of-the-sector-policy-report\/\">Ontario Nonprofit Network<\/a> in 2022 revealed that 65% of nonprofits were struggling with these HR issues, with Indigenous- and Black-led organizations facing particularly dire conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the COVID-19 pandemic intensified these challenges, <strong>the root cause remains the sector\u2019s chronic underfunding<\/strong>. Studies from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ocasi.org\/sites\/default\/files\/addressing-employee-turnover-among-ocasi-membership-agencies-final-report.pdf\">Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spno.ca\/images\/pdf\/SPNO-ESA-Submission-FINAL.pdf\">Social Planning Network of Ontario<\/a> highlight how insecure funding has led to low wages, unstable employment, and high turnover for decades. As a result, burnout, declining morale, and difficulty attracting and retaining talent have become widespread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"what-cicp-data-reveals-about-employee-turnover\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What CICP Data Reveals About Employee Turnover<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2022, the <strong>Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP)<\/strong> has surveyed charities weekly to track sector-wide challenges. In <a href=\"https:\/\/carletonu.yul1.qualtrics.com\/reports\/RC\/public\/Y2FybGV0b251LTYzY2E2YTM5Mzc2ZGFjMDAxYWRkODZkNS1VUl85enhKcHR6aDB1N3ZjYTE=\">March 2023<\/a><strong> and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/carletonu.yul1.qualtrics.com\/reports\/RC\/public\/Y2FybGV0b251LTY2NTVkNjFjMGU3Y2IwMDAwODA0NGExYy1VUl85enhKcHR6aDB1N3ZjYTE=\">June 2024<\/a><strong>,<\/strong> we specifically examined staff retention, uncovering a <strong>significant increase in employee turnover<\/strong>\u2014primarily driven by <strong>insufficient pay, benefits, and rising burnout<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"employee-turnover-trends\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Employee Turnover Trends:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We categorized turnover into three groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No turnover<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low turnover (1-20%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High turnover (21-100%)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Our data shows a <strong>worsening trend over time<\/strong>. By 2024, that gap vanished as well, with both urban and rural charities reporting 38.5% high turnover. This suggests that <strong>HR challenges are now widespread, regardless of location<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"why-are-charity-employees-leaving\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Are Charity Employees Leaving?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand the root causes of turnover, we analyzed data from organizations that reported staffing losses. The primary reason behind employee turnover in the charitable sector remains remuneration and benefits, with a staggering 45% of charities citing this as a critical factor in 2023 and 47% in 2024. Additionally, burnout and being overwhelmed by workload pressures are growing concerns, increasing from roughly 28% in 2023 to roughly 35% in 2024. Precarious funding, heavy workloads, and insufficient pay are driving skilled workers out of the sector, while organizations are left grappling with mounting service demands.
