However, there are some guidelines you should follow when creating tables to ensure that they are accessible (for example, able to be coherently read by a screen reader). These are, in brief:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not use tables to format text, only to display data<\/li>\n<li>Include column headings, and make sure they are\u00a0<a href=\"#head\">formatted as such<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Do not try to include any other complex features inside a table, such as putting a table inside another table<\/li>\n<li>Avoid blank cells &#8211; use &#8220;n\/a&#8221; or &#8220;none&#8221; instead<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For further explanation of why these guidelines are important as well as examples and practice exercises, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/webworkshops\/accessibility-training\/module-4-tables\/how-to-make-accessible-tables\/\">please see module 4 of our web accessibility training.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For an example of a table in CMS, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/advanced-training\/module-3-advanced-post-elements\/tables\/sample-table\/\">see our sample table<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Step-by-Step<\/h2>\n<h3>Add a Table<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the page or post you would like to add a table to.<\/li>\n<li>Click the Table icon. There will be a drop-down menu, under which you can hover over <strong>Insert Table<\/strong> and specify the dimensions of your table.<\/li>\n<li>Choose the number of columns and the number of rows by hovering over the amount of amount of cells you would like to make up your table. When the proper values are showing, click once.<\/li>\n<li>You can adjust the size of the table by dragging the handles at the corners and edges<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1342 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Add-table.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1177\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Add-table.png 1177w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Add-table-240x105.png 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Add-table-400x175.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Add-table-160x70.png 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Add-table-768x335.png 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Add-table-360x157.png 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1177px) 100vw, 1177px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Edit a Table<\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"head\"><\/a>Add a heading:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Click in the cell or highlight the cells you would like to make into headings<\/li>\n<li>Click the table icon and hover over <strong>Cell\u00a0<\/strong>then click\u00a0<strong>Table cell properties<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the\u00a0<strong>General<\/strong> tab, click the dropdown next to\u00a0<strong>Cell type<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Select\u00a0<strong>Header cell<\/strong> from the dropdown<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Ok<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Add a row or column:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Click within one of the cells of your table.<\/li>\n<li>Click the Table icon.<\/li>\n<li>You can add a row by selecting <strong>Row<\/strong> then <strong>Insert row before<\/strong> or <strong>Insert row after<\/strong>. This video will discuss tables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To insert a table to your page, click the table icon and hover over <strong>Table<\/strong>. Adjust the number of columns and rows by moving your cursor. Once you\u2019re happy with your selection, click once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The table will appear in the page editor. You can change its proportions by dragging the table\u2019s corners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To add a row or column, click inside your table, then click the table icon again and hover over either row or column, depending on what you\u2019d like to add.
