If you would like it enabled, please <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/contact\/\">contact the ITS Service Desk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once it\u2019s enabled, you will then see a Newsletter item in the left hand navigation within your dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>If you just want to test out building a newsletter, you should have permission to do so on the <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.carleton.ca\/ccms-playground\/\">CCMS Playground<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1690 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Newsletter-item-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"237\" height=\"54\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Newsletter-item-1.png 237w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/wp-content\/uploads\/Newsletter-item-1-160x36.png 160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 237px) 100vw, 237px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Step-by-Step<\/h2>\n<h3>Creating a New Newsletter<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Add a new Newsletter <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/basic-training\/module-1-getting-started\/managing-content-part-1\/\">using the side or top menu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Fill in the\u00a0<strong>Add Title\u00a0<\/strong>field with a name for your newsletter. This will display in the URL of the newsletter. Usually this is something like &#8220;Month Year Newsletter&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Fill in the\u00a0<strong>Newsletter Title\u00a0<\/strong>field with a title for your newsletter. This will display at the top of the newsletter, under the banner. If you leave this field blank, it will display the default newsletter name <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/advanced-training\/module-5-newsletter\/building-a-newsletter\/#options\">that you can configure in the\u00a0<strong>Navigation Options<\/strong> menu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You can choose a banner for your newsletter. If left blank, the banner will display the default banner <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/advanced-training\/module-5-newsletter\/building-a-newsletter\/#options\">that you can configure in the\u00a0<strong>Navigation Options<\/strong> menu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Adding Content to Your Newsletter<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Enter your content by selecting Add Block. There are 3 types of blocks:\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li><strong>Text Block<\/strong> &#8211; add a <strong>Header<\/strong>, add your content in the <strong>Text Area<\/strong>, and choose to add a read more link and an image.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recent News<\/strong> &#8211; choose how many posts you would like to display, add a\u00a0<strong>Header<\/strong>, and select your news items using the\u00a0<strong>Specific<\/strong> posts option under <strong>News Shown<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Select Categories\u00a0<\/strong>under\u00a0<strong>News Type.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Upcoming Events<\/strong> &#8211; choose how many events you would like to display, add a <strong>Header<\/strong>, and select your events using the <strong>Specific<\/strong> posts option under <strong>Events\u00a0Shown<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Select Categories\u00a0<\/strong>under\u00a0<strong>Events Type.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Publish Your Newsletter<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cms-help\/basic-training\/module-1-getting-started\/managing-content-part-1\/#saving\">Save, schedule, or publish your newsletter<\/a>. If you want it to be published on a certain date, simply schedule it for that date.<\/li>\n<li>View your newsletter by clicking <strong>Preview\u00a0<\/strong>in the publish menu, or by clicking\u00a0<strong>View Newsletter<\/strong> in the top menu.<\/li>\n<li>On the content of your newsletter (i.e. not the banner or footer), right click and choose <strong>View page source<\/strong>. Highlight all the code on this page (you can use Ctrl+A on PC or Command+A on Mac to highlight all text) and then copy it.<\/li>\n<li>You will then need to paste the code into your email distribution tool (e.g. Campaign Monitor, Lyris, Mailchimp)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><a id=\"options\"><\/a>Customizing your Newsletter Options<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Hover over Newsletter in the side menu and click on\u00a0<strong>Newsletter Options<\/strong>. Here, you can fill out some default settings for all newsletters created on your site.<\/li>\n<li>Under\u00a0<strong>Newsletter Name<\/strong>, you can select a default name for your newsletters, such as &#8220;[Site Name] News&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Under\u00a0<strong>Newsletter Banner Type,\u00a0<\/strong>you can select a default banner for your newsletters.\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>If you select\u00a0<strong>Hosted,\u00a0<\/strong>then you can add the name of the hosted banner under <strong>Newsletter Hosted Banner.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>If you select\u00a0<strong>Custom<\/strong>, then you can upload a newsletter banner by clicking\u00a0<strong>Add Image.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Under\u00a0<strong>Newsletter Disclaimer<\/strong>, you can add a footer that will be placed at the bottom of your newsletter.<\/li>\n<li>Once you&#8217;re done with your changes, click\u00a0<strong>Update\u00a0<\/strong>in the publish menu.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Video Tutorial<\/h2>\n<div class=\"content__video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Module Five: Newsletter\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dTgQeCPAEF4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>Transcript<\/h3>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-module-five-newsletter\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-module-five-newsletter\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Module Five: Newsletter<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-module-five-newsletter\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hello and welcome to Module 5 of our Advanced CMS Training. This video will cover building a newsletter on your website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you can create a newsletter on your CMS website, this feature has to be enabled by Web Services. To have this feature enabled, please contact the ITS Service Desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once it\u2019s enabled, you can begin creating your newsletter by adding a new newsletter from the top menu or the side menu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, fill in the <strong>Add Title<\/strong> field. This will be displayed in the URL of the newsletter and is usually something like \u201cMonth \/ Year Newsletter\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, fill in the newsletter title with what you want to display as the newsletter title. If you leave this field blank, the default title will display. Later in this video, we will demonstrate how to set a default title using <strong>Newsletter Options<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also choose a banner for your newsletter. Again, if left blank, the default banner will be displayed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, add content by clicking <strong>Add Block<\/strong>. There are three types of blocks you can add. To add one, just click on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Text blocks allow you to add a header and add content in the <strong>Text Area<\/strong>. You have access to many, but not all, of the formatting options that are available for pages and posts. You can also insert a <strong>Read More<\/strong> link and an image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may add <strong>Recent News<\/strong> to display recent news posts. Here you can choose how many items you wish to display, you can add a header, and select your news items by either specifically selecting posts or by pulling in categories of posts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to <strong>Recent News<\/strong>,<strong> Upcoming Events<\/strong> allows you to list content, this time events. Again, you can choose how many events you would like to display, add a header, and choose your events either by specifically selecting them or by choosing categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save, schedule or publish your newsletter using the publish module.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To add the newsletter to your mail distribution software, you will need to grab its source code. To do this, you can view your newsletter by clicking <strong>Preview<\/strong> or <strong>View Newsletter<\/strong>. Right click on the content of your newsletter and choose <strong>View page source<\/strong>. Please note that this will not work if you right click on the banner of your newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will open a new page with the page\u2019s source code. Highlight all the code on this page. You can use Ctrl+A on PC or Command+A on Mac to highlight all text. Test out your newsletter making skills with the following tasks. Please note that newsletters may not be enabled on your website.
