However, these models are also inherently limited, due to the restricted amount of data available on the operation of the cognition under investigation, and the possible corresponding computational implementations. As a consequence, simplifications are often necessary. However, in order to form better, more realistic models, these simplifications have to be overcome. Two areas where cognitive models are particularly influential are in the fields of memory and language. Models in these areas share a common simplifying assumption: the meanings of words and the contexts that they occur in are largely ignored. This talk will examine, across a number of different areas, including recognition memory, lexical organization, and lexical processing, how superior models of cognition can be constructed by integrating realistic processing models with representations learned from the language environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"daevent-type":[39],"event-audience":[],"event-featured":[],"yoast_head":"\n
Dr. Brendan Johns - ICS Colloquium - Events - Department of Cognitive Science<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Dr. Brendan Johns of the Department of Psychology at Queen's University will be giving a colloquium talk on Thursday, March 13th, at 11:30 a.m., in room\" \/>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/cu-events\/dr-brendan-johns-ics-colloquium\/\" \/>\n<meta name=\"twitter:label1\" content=\"Est. reading time\" \/>\n\t<meta name=\"twitter:data1\" content=\"1 minute\" \/>\n{\"@context\":\"https:\/\/schema.org\",\"@graph\":[{\"@type\":\"WebPage\",\"@id\":\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/cu-events\/dr-brendan-johns-ics-colloquium\/\",\"url\":\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/cu-events\/dr-brendan-johns-ics-colloquium\/\",\"name\":\"Dr. Brendan Johns - ICS Colloquium - Events - Department of Cognitive Science\",\"isPartOf\":{\"@id\":\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/#website\"},\"datePublished\":\"2014-02-04T17:01:25+00:00\",\"dateModified\":\"2014-02-28T18:40:32+00:00\",\"description\":\"Dr. Brendan Johns of the Department of Psychology at Queen's University will be giving a colloquium talk on Thursday, March 13th, at 11:30 a.m., in room\",\"breadcrumb\":{\"@id\":\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/cu-events\/dr-brendan-johns-ics-colloquium\/#breadcrumb\"},\"inLanguage\":\"en-US\",\"potentialAction\":[{\"@type\":\"ReadAction\",\"target\":[\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/cu-events\/dr-brendan-johns-ics-colloquium\/\"]}]},{\"@type\":\"BreadcrumbList\",\"@id\":\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/cu-events\/dr-brendan-johns-ics-colloquium\/#breadcrumb\",\"itemListElement\":[{\"@type\":\"ListItem\",\"position\":1,\"name\":\"Home\",\"item\":\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/\"},{\"@type\":\"ListItem\",\"position\":2,\"name\":\"Events\",\"item\":\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/cu-events\/\"},{\"@type\":\"ListItem\",\"position\":3,\"name\":\"Dr. Brendan Johns –
