As a cognitive scientist and experimental psychologist,<\/strong> Professor Tovey\u2019s research focuses on cognitive augmentation for the public good<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

(1) How can scientists and policy-makers be assisted in working effectively with increasingly\u00a0overwhelming flows of data?<\/strong> Specifically, how can the assistance provided by algorithms be improved with better cognitive ergonomics? How can information be re-factored to leverage perceptual intelligence?<\/p>\n

(2) How can decision-makers better understand the potential effects of their decisions in complex domains? <\/strong>Specifically, how can simulation and visualization improve decision-making support for policy-makers? How can these tools be cognitively integrated into policy-making processes?<\/p>\n

(3) How can large groups of people more effectively support science and policy-making?<\/strong>\u00a0Specifically, what are the cognitive design principles that lead to more effective\u00a0outcomes when large numbers of people contribute, collaborate, or offer feedback?<\/p>\n

As a digital historian<\/strong>, Professor Tovey designs site-specific interventions for the public good. <\/strong><\/p>\n

1) How can site-specific interpretive material be used to augment the experience of place and build community?<\/strong> Work includes the design of geo-locative audio and video, historical 3D models,\u00a0richly-annotated site-specific interpretive material, and\u00a0digitally-enhanced theatrical re-enactments.<\/p>\n

2) How can historical exhibits be used to encourage interest in STEM?<\/strong> Specifically, where are most fruitful intersections between public history and public astronomy?\u00a0Work includes the design of exhibit environments that offer visitors highly immersive historical experiences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
