We address these issues here by way of Dennett’s appeal to use computational thinking, specifically we use the Common Model of Cognition. Results show that the characteristics thought to be distinctive of System-1 and System-2 instead form a spectrum of cognitive properties. Our method of analyzing System-1 and System-2 clarifies their underlying mechanisms, persisting misconceptions, and implications for metacognition.

Collaboration:

Was this research conducted with your supervisor?

Yes

Was this research conducted with fellow graduate students at Carleton?

No

Was this research conducted with researchers external to Carleton?

No

Were there challenges to conducting this research/writing this paper?

Challenges involved understanding a large body of research literature regarding dual-process models, and articulating its general terminology with precise computational language.

Getting published:

Was the journal you published in the first journal you submitted this paper to?

It was the first conference proceedings we submitted to.

Why did you choose this journal?

This conference was chosen because its focus precisely matched our paper’s topic.

How many other journals did you submit this paper to before it landed in the journal that eventually published your work?

None

What was your revision experience?

There were only minor revisions to make.

How many rounds of revision did you experience?

One

Did you need to collect new data to satisfy a reviewer?

No

How long did it take from first submission to acceptance?

3 months

Is this your first publication?

No

How many other publications do you have?

One other publication

Name: Brendan Conway-Smith http://cognitivemodelinglab.com/index.php/brendan-conway-smith/ Program Info: In what program are you currently enrolled? Cognitive Science What year of the program are you currently in? 3rd Area of Study / Concentration: Computation Citation in APA format: Conway-Smith, B., & West, R.
