{"id":202,"date":"2009-08-28T14:42:50","date_gmt":"2009-08-28T18:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/?page_id=202"},"modified":"2025-05-05T10:36:47","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T14:36:47","slug":"facilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 100%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] pb-5 after:w-10 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Facilities\n                    <\/h1>\n                \n                                \n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<p>The Department of Cognitive Science currently occupies the top floor of the 22-storey <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/campus\/campus-buildings\/dunton-tower-dt\/\">Dunton Tower<\/a> at Carleton University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 2007, the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/vsim\/\">V-Sim building<\/a> was opened and is now home to a wealth of interdisciplinary research facilities linked to Cognitive Science researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"laboratory-facilities\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laboratory Facilities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Laboratory facilities are available for three kinds of activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experimental investigations into the psychological aspects of linguistic, cognitive, perceptual, memory, and attentional processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Empirical research on linguistic phenomena<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Computational research exploring artificial cognitive systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For experimental investigations into cognitive processes, students in the program will have available the laboratories of the members of the Cognitive Science core faculty whose disciplinary appointment is in Psychology. This includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/research\/research-labs\/\">Aviation and Cognitive Engineering lab<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/cmi\/\">Math Cognition Lab<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/research\/research-labs\/\">Speech Lab<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/ccmprojects.blogspot.com\/\">Cognitive Modelling Lab<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/research\/research-labs\/\">Cognitive Development Lab <\/a>and the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/lbl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Language and Brain&nbsp;Lab<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For research into language, students will have available both the facilities of the School of Linguistics and Language Studies at Carleton, including sound booths, facilities for videotaping, and experiment rooms, and the Linguistics facilities at the University of Ottawa, including equipment for acoustic analysis, articulatory analysis, and psycholinguistic research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"computer-facilities\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Computer Facilities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Research requiring significant computational power is done in the School of Computer Science&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scs.carleton.ca\/technical-support\/computer-laboratories\">Intelligent Systems Lab,<\/a> or in Dr. West&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/ccmprojects.blogspot.com\/\">Cognitive Modeling Lab<\/a>. This provides easy access to a number of high-speed machines for running computational simulations as well as a video editing suite for creating stimuli for experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students also have access to Carleton&#8217;s central academic computer facilities. In total, there are 30 computer labs in 10 different buildings across campus. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/all-services\/\">ITS Managed Services<\/a> has an extensive array of software, including word processing, statistical, and web development packages.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Cognitive Science currently occupies the top floor of the 22-storey Dunton Tower at Carleton University.
