Funds are awarded from the Discovery Centre and Office of the Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) to students engaging in undergraduate research with a supporting faculty member.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone at the Institute of Cognitive Science wishes to congratulate both Olivia McMurtry and Kenda Parsons.<\/p>\n<p>From each in their own words:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivia McMurtry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11961\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Olivia-McMurtry-400x400-240x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"149\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Olivia-McMurtry-400x400-240x240.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Olivia-McMurtry-400x400-160x160.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Olivia-McMurtry-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Olivia-McMurtry-400x400-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Olivia-McMurtry-400x400-360x360.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I will be working on a collaborative project with Dr. Tamara Sorenson Duncan from Carleton University and Dr. Johanne Paradis from the University of Alberta.\u00a0This project examines language acquisition in children with autism from immigrant and refugee backgrounds. In particular, this research investigates the extent to which home language factors and experiences influence the emerging bilingual abilities of children.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kenda Parsons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11962\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kenda-Parsons-400x400-240x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"149\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kenda-Parsons-400x400-240x240.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kenda-Parsons-400x400-160x160.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kenda-Parsons-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kenda-Parsons-400x400-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kenda-Parsons-400x400-360x360.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The main topic I will be addressing is the development of future-oriented cognition in preschoolers, specifically the notion of saving. \u201cSaving\u201d focuses on the benefits gained from conserving resources for future, rather than immediate, consumption. I will design a research project to investigate early childhood saving behaviours as well as build and extend previous research by Professor Deepthi Kamawar and colleagues focusing on the possible long-term benefits budget creation may have on saving.<\/p>\n<p>Again, we all wish both students well with their research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two separate students from Cognitive Science have each been awarded an I-CUREUS Internship.
