Sci.Colloquium : Searching for the visual number form area: An adventure in open science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Date:<\/strong> Nov 18, 2020 03:00pm -4:30pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>Location:<\/strong> online<\/p>\n<p><strong>Title:<\/strong> Searching for the visual number form area: An adventure in open science<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaker:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/people\/rebecca-merkley\/\">Rebecca Merkley<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The triple-code model of\u00a0number\u00a0representation proposed that there are three distinct brain regions for three different numerical representations: verbal words,\u00a0visual\u00a0digits and abstract magnitudes. It was hypothesized that the region for\u00a0visual\u00a0digits, known as the\u00a0number\u00a0form\u00a0area, would be in ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOTC), near other\u00a0visual\u00a0category-specific regions, such as the\u00a0visual\u00a0word\u00a0form\u00a0area. However, neuroimaging investigations\u00a0searching\u00a0for a region that responds in a category-specific manner to the\u00a0visual\u00a0presentation of\u00a0number\u00a0symbols have yielded inconsistent results. In this talk, I will report on a project exploring whether the putative &#8216;number\u00a0form\u00a0area&#8217; can be reliably located in a reproducible region in the vOTC and whether it is truly a category-specific region for\u00a0number\u00a0symbols.
