The Seed aims to eliminate poverty and food insecurity.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<p>Food Security means all people, at all times, have access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food. But for eight per cent of Canadians, food security does not exist. That\u2019s 1.1 million households, according to Statistics Canada\u2019s most recent 2011-2012 report. So how can communities do better?<\/p>\n<p>The statistics are devastating, but Erin Nelson and her colleagues harnessed these ugly figures as motivation. Through community research and consultation, Nelson, a current postdoctoral fellow at Wilfred Laurier University, and her team founded a local community food centre called <a href=\"http:\/\/theseedguelph.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Seed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Based out of Guelph, The Seed aims to eliminate poverty and food insecurity. It also channels a unique and alternative method of food delivery. The organization shifts away from the old-fashioned, \u2018food bank charity case,\u2019 to a newer model that focuses on social justice and equity. \u201cThe <a href=\"http:\/\/cfccanada.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">community food centre model<\/a>,\u201d Nelson said, \u201cis for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the traditional food bank model breeds stigma and judgement, Nelson said, so accessing food services can sometimes be humiliating and degrading for people. \u201cCommunity food centres focus on people <em>not<\/em> feeling that way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2921\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 240px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/TheSeed-Meeting.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2921 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/TheSeed-Meeting-240x180.jpg\" alt=\"A group meeting held at The Seed community food hub in Guelph, Ontario.\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/TheSeed-Meeting-240x180.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/TheSeed-Meeting-160x120.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/TheSeed-Meeting-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/TheSeed-Meeting-360x270.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/TheSeed-Meeting.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A group meeting held at The Seed community food hub in Guelph, Ontario. \u00a9TheSeed<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Seed creates a space for people where they\u2019re going to feel empowered, they\u2019ll feel a real sense of community building, and come together around food in a positive way,\u201d said Nelson.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next three years, The Seed aims to become a food hub, rather than a food bank.\u00a0 The centre will, for example, encompass a community kitchen, a local garden, and nutrition and healthy eating workshops open to all. It will also distribute healthy and fresh food to local emergency food providers and their clients.<\/p>\n<p>The Seed\u2019s founders asked locals who have experienced poverty and used emergency food services in the past to play an integral role in the planning process. \u201cWe wanted people who were using the service to be involved in decisions about how the [new] service would be created,\u201d Nelson said.<\/p>\n<p>The planning and development of The Seed was largely a community-driven, consultative process, Nelson said. \u201cWe used it as a big tent for people to get involved,\u201d she said. \u201cWe hosted lots of community events and we gained partners in the university, social service agencies and businesses\u2026 we tried to make it a positive experience all around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trillium Foundation provided a prestigious $267,000 grant to develop The Seed.
