{"id":3036,"date":"2016-02-04T09:23:55","date_gmt":"2016-02-04T14:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/?p=3036"},"modified":"2016-05-09T09:13:01","modified_gmt":"2016-05-09T13:13:01","slug":"humans-of-cfice-jason-garlough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/2016\/humans-of-cfice-jason-garlough\/","title":{"rendered":"Humans of CFICE: Jason Garlough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Amy Richardson, CFICE Communications RA<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"content__video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9qPjfHoM2Ao?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Community brokering is one of the models\u00a0Community First: Impacts of Community Engagement (CFICE) uses\u00a0to get the community more engaged with local institutions and resources. <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/people\/jason-garlough\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Garlough<\/a>, executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/oetn.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ottawa Eco-Talent Network<\/a> (OETN), helps to facilitate those connections to make Ottawa a better, more sustainable city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCFICE is really an opportunity to bring together so many different groups that would not normally be sitting around the same table,\u201d Jason says.<\/p>\n<p>At the OETN, Jason facilitates connections between researchers and academics (the talent), and local community groups and non-profit organizations. Once the connection has been made, the talent works with the organization to provide expert pro-bono advice and research for projects already on the go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really want to make best use of human resources and empower organizations with mentors,\u201d Jason says.<\/p>\n<p>The OETN\u2019s work has been made possible, in part, by CFICE\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/sector-specific-work\/community-environmental-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\">Community Environmental Sustainability<\/a> (Ottawa) hub, who helped OETN secure a 3-year, $160,000 grant from the Trillium Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there was so much success in the first phase of CFICE for the community brokerage model, I really felt that there was a huge opportunity to continue being involved in the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/cross-sector-work\/cce-brokering\/\">community-campus engagement brokerage working group<\/a>. CFICE helped produce research and the business case for the need of community brokerage,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>For Jason, his ideal Ottawa is one where people are\u00a0making the best use of existing resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be living in an Ottawa where we don\u2019t only use buildings for seven hours out of the 24 hour (day); where we have communities that are engaged and people have a sense of community,\u201d Jason says.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the reasons why he became involved in CFICE\u2019s Community-Campus Engagement Brokering Working Group. The Working Group seeks to understand how existing brokerage models work and identify best practices for establishing and maintaining productive community-first CCE partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunity first is really about reaching out to the grassroots and listening to their needs. We have our ear to the ground listening to the needs of the organizations,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In making our communities better, Jason says community-campus partnerships play an integral role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can leverage our strengths to build a more sustainable and resilient community. This makes better use of the multiple resources we have, the capacity we have for research and answering some big questions here in the Ottawa area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the ways Jason is currently doing this at the OETN is by developing a multi-sector Ottawa brokerage platform.
