Coordinated by the SOWK 4204 class in partnership with CFICE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/sector-specific-work\/violence-against-women\/\" target=\"_blank\">Violence Against Women<\/a>\u00a0(VAW) Hub, the discussion explored the role of social work in ending gender-based violence. Both this campaign and the Rise Up Social Work event are in line with the UN UNiTE campaign for 2016: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news\/in-focus\/end-violence-against-women\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orange the World<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orange the World emphasizes the need for financing efforts to end violence against women and girls. The campaign chose the color orange to symbolize a brighter future and encourages people to wear the colour to show support for ending violence against women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rise Up Social Work event featured panelist speakers Dr. Patricia McGuire, Barbara Rother, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/people\/diana-majury-2\/\">Diana Majury<\/a>, Dillon Black, and Sydney Schneider. The speakers discussed different aspects of gender-based violence including, but not limited to, gender-based domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual violence as part of warfare, and cyber violence (including how to hold social media accountable).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In light of Carleton University\u2019s recently approved Sexual Violence Policy, a policy put in place to satisfy the new provincial requirement, panelists spent some time discussing sexual violence on campus and the importance of validating the experiences of\u00a0sexual assault survivors. Panelists also discussed male dominated spaces and the creation of the sexual assault support centre at Carleton. For Sydney Schneider, program coordinator for CUSA Womyn&#8217;s Centre, change comes from advocating for safe spaces among spaces that are primarily male dominated. In particular, Sydney has been advocating for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metronews.ca\/news\/ottawa\/2016\/11\/16\/carleton-students-campaigning-for-womens-only-gym-hours.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women\u2019s only gym hours at Carleton.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CFICE\u2019s VAW research assistant, Anna Przednowek, who is also the instructor for SOWK 4204 whose class organized the Rise Up Social Work! event, said the purpose of the event was to engage in conversations about violence against women and gender-based violence. \u201cI think our event was a success,\u201d said Przednowek. \u201cWe brought the issues of VAW\/GBV [Gender based violence] to our class and had an opportunity to hear from experts, including survivors, who are doing the work both in the community and in academia. We had quite a few students and community members outside of our class participate in the event.\u201d Przednowek noted that many of the attendees were already involved in VAW work, so the\u00a0challenge remaining is to engage those who are disengaged or deactivated from thinking about VAW issues. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4989\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 240px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4989 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/VAW-16days2016_09_EDITED-240x313.jpg\" alt=\"A portrait of Emily Bohusz, a Bachelor of Social Work student in the fourth year.\" width=\"240\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/VAW-16days2016_09_EDITED-240x313.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/VAW-16days2016_09_EDITED-160x208.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/VAW-16days2016_09_EDITED-768x1000.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/VAW-16days2016_09_EDITED-400x521.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/VAW-16days2016_09_EDITED-360x469.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emily Bohusz, a Bachelor of Social Work student in the fourth year, shared her thoughts on the event.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Bohusz, a BSW student in the fourth year Social Work class who attended the event, also felt the event did a good job\u00a0in bringing attention to VAW issues. \u201cIt\u2019s a really diverse group with lots of different topics that all stemmed back to violence against women, between indigenous rights, LGBTQ issues, and ageism and Grandmothers [Grandmothers Advocacy Network], as well as international issues,\u201d said Emily. \u201cIt was really interesting that all these different perspectives came in and brought the issues back to the one topic of violence against women.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discussion and the panelists highlighted the importance of this event in drawing attention to issues surrounding gender-based violence. As Dillon Black, an activist member of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.octevaw-cocvff.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCTEVAW<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0who participated in the panel discussion, said \u201c[gender-based violence] is not just a women\u2019s issue, it\u2019s everyone\u2019s issue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s an important issue that affects all women,\u201d Bohusz added. \u201cAll women on campus are susceptible to being victims of violence and I think it\u2019s really important that we\u2019re here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campaigns like 16 Days of Activism certainly help draw attention and awareness to issues of violence against women, but it is important that we don\u2019t forget about this issue the other 349 days of the year. \u201cOne of the reasons for holding the Rise Up Social Work! Event was to engage in conversations about VAW\/GBV, activism and the roles of Social Work in ending VAW\/GBV at the School of Social Work during the 16 Days of Activism. Students are also very interested in our role as students and future social work practitioners and what we can do in our social work practice,\u201d said Przednowek. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As discussed at the event, you can do your part to\u00a0keep the conversation going by staying informed about things such as policies that are affecting the lives of women who have experienced violence. You can also join protests and show solidarity with movements both in body and on social media.
