When you upgraded your cell phone, what did you do with your old one? What about your retired desktop computer and monitor? Did you know that old electronics and batteries can be recycled? Well, now you do.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5115\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/19-Recycle-240x201.jpg\" alt=\"blue circuit board  \" width=\"209\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/19-Recycle-240x201.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/19-Recycle-160x134.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/19-Recycle-768x644.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/19-Recycle-400x335.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/19-Recycle-360x302.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/19-Recycle.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many parts of electronics and batteries that can be disassembled and recycled, don\u2019t just throw them in the trash. \u00a0The City of Ottawa has an online <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ottawa.ca\/en\/residents\/garbage-and-recycling\/hazardous-waste-and-special-items#electronic-waste\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resource<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine where hazardous waste and special items are disposed. Batteries and various electronics are included.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/earth911.com\/category\/eco-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earth911<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another resource that allows users to find recycling locations for many materials. It allows you to search based your postal code so you have the ability to recycle wherever you are.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5119\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 249px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5119\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/energizer-bunny-240x232.png\" alt=\"\u00a9Energizer\" width=\"249\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/energizer-bunny-240x232.png 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/energizer-bunny-160x155.png 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/energizer-bunny-400x387.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/energizer-bunny-360x348.png 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/energizer-bunny.png 722w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Energizer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As an alternative to recycling some phone companies offer trade-in deals when you purchase a new phone. \u00a0So you can possibly save money on your new phone by trading in your old phone. That way the company producing the phone can dispose and recycle it so you don&#8217;t have to worry about what to do with it or where to recycle it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or you could sell or donate old electronics that are still in working condition online or at second hand stores. Someone else could reuse what you no longer use. \u00a0Some non profit organizations accept donated electronic devices that they repurpose or use to receive funding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cell Phones for Soldiers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ncadv.org\/give-back\/donate\/donateaphone\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Coalition Against Domestic Violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Carly Foubert, CFICE Communications RA What did you do with the old batteries when tested and changed the smoke detector and TV remote controls?
