Check out these 6 ways to get the ball rolling with your community-engaged learning!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Talk to your academic advisor or instructor<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before you dive right into course lists and internship postings, set up a meeting with your academic advisor or instructor.<\/p>\n<p>Ask about current opportunities that exist in your department. Instructors can give you tips on how to apply for current opportunities, provide you with contacts, and help you construct solid applications for community-engaged internships, courses, and practicums.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Pause to consider<\/em><\/strong>: what kind of experience are you hoping to gain from community-engaged learning?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>2. Check out the <\/strong><strong>Student Experience Office<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/seo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Experience Office<\/a> (SEO) will provide you with information on how to engage in service-learning and leadership projects in the community. The SEO also holds several days of service a month with multiple chances to volunteer in your community.<\/p>\n<p>Another neat way to get involved is by participating in a service-focused Alternative Spring Break. The SEO can show you how to apply and go on a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/seo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Alternative Spring Break<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Pause to Consider<\/em><\/strong>: How much time can you commit to community-engaged learning this year?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>3. Connect with a Community Partner <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ready to dive in? Western University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.success.uwo.ca\/experience\/pdf\/Student%20Guide%20to%20Community%20Engaged%20Learning.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Student Guide to Community Engaged Learning<\/em><\/a> is a great resource that will familiarize you with definitions and basic non-governmental organiztion (NGO) terms. This guide also asks questions like, \u201cWhat kind of things will I be involved with at an organization?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Pause to consider:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0What skills could you offer to the community? Do a Placement <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Placements are another great way to get involved with community-engaged learning. Check with your department for specific opportunities, and in the meantime take a look at the department of Social Work\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/socialwork\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010BSW-Distant-FS-package-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines for a placement<\/a>. This guide will help you consider the things you will need for a placement such as insurance, liability, and security checks.<\/p>\n<p>Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/current-students\/healthandcounselling\/self-help\/student-placement.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flinder\u2019s University\u2019s Tips for Success<\/a> for resources on how to have a successful placement, and be sure to take a look at this how-to guide from Wilfred-Laurier University on <a href=\"https:\/\/students.wlu.ca\/work-leadership-and-volunteering\/community-service-learning\/pre-placement-screening.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pre-Placement Screening<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Pause to consider<\/em>: <\/strong>Does your placement require a police background check?
