CFICE Academic Co-lead Charles Levkoe has been featured in several news articles and interviews recently with the roll out of a new food security pilot program at Lakehead University.<\/p>\n

The program is being funded through a grant provided to Meal Exchange by the Maple Leaf Centre for Action on Food Security. The goal of the pilot is to capitalize on student leadership to develop and implement solutions to food insecurity on campus with an eye to long-term impacts.<\/p>\n

Lakehead University in particular was chosen for the pilot program after Meal Exchange’s national student hunger survey revealed that over 45 per cent of Lakehead University students lack sufficient access to healthy food.<\/p>\n

Over the next three years, Lakehead University will work with Meal Exchange and Ryerson University to identify and address barriers to campus food insecurity.<\/p>\n

According to Levkoe, “There’s a real opportunity here to address not just some of the problems in Thunder Bay but actually to develop a model to share some of the things we’re learning across Canada…to really be a leader on how we can address these issues beyond just kind of charity-based solutions.”<\/p>\n
