While the policy itself is still in development and is expected to be announced in the spring, this report lends Parliamentary weight to many of Food Secure Canada\u2019s key ideas.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In Food Secure Canada\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foodsecurecanada.org\/sites\/foodsecurecanada.org\/files\/attached_files\/presentation_to_the_standing_committee_on_agriculture_26sept2017_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presentation to the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food<\/a>, Executive Director Diana Bronson highlighted six key priorities stemming from our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foodsecurecanada.org\/policy-advocacy\/five-big-ideas-better-food-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Five Big Ideas for a Better Food System<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Recognition of the\u00a0<strong>right to food<\/strong>\u00a0as a guiding principle<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Support for a new\u00a0<strong>relationship between Canada and Indigenous Peoples through food<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Prioritization of\u00a0<strong>children and youth,<\/strong>\u00a0including the development of a national healthy school food program<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Support for the\u00a0<strong>next generation of farmers<\/strong>\u00a0and promotion of a\u00a0<strong>diversity of farming practices<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Establishment of a\u00a0<strong>National Food Policy Council<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Support for\u00a0<strong>social innovation<\/strong>\u00a0on equal footing with technological innovation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6252\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_article_5-big-ideas.jpg\" alt=\"A banner image with 5 pots of the following: A wooden spoon, a tomato, a green leaf, a blue fish, and comment bubbles.\" width=\"800\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_article_5-big-ideas.jpg 800w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_article_5-big-ideas-160x44.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_article_5-big-ideas-240x66.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_article_5-big-ideas-768x211.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_article_5-big-ideas-400x110.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_article_5-big-ideas-360x99.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Right-to-Food Breakthrough<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Most significant is the recommendation to put the right to food for all Canadians at the heart of the new food policy. As noted in the report, \u201ca number of witnesses said that the first component that should be included in a food policy is official recognition of the right to food.\u201d Many of us were discouraged to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foodsecurecanada.org\/resources-news\/news-media\/fsc-news\/un-report-bolsters-canadas-right-food-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see the dismissive reaction of the federal government to the 2012 UN Mission<\/a>\u00a0on the Right to Food, so it is encouraging that a human-rights approach to important policy issues is back on the table. The recently announced\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.placetocallhome.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">federal housing strategy<\/a>\u00a0embraces the right to housing which gives us hope the food policy will embrace the right to food.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Governance Is Critical<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Food Secure Canada also identified governance as a critical issue for food policy success, knowing that not all the complex and systemic issues could be tackled in such a short time frame. Civil society has long been excluded from food policy-making in Canada, and we need a more transparent and participatory mechanism to be put in place. The Committee\u2019s final recommendation to \u201cestablish a national food policy advisory body consisting of the key government departments, the agriculture and agri-food sector, academia, Indigenous peoples and civil society\u201d is a significant step forward on this longstanding priority of Food Secure Canada. Many of our academic, industry and civil society partners also raised this as a preoccupation during the Committee hearings. It\u2019s nice to see that Parliamentarians agree!<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Support for Sustainable Agriculture<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Other encouraging recommendations include support for organics and strengthening regional food systems. Food Secure Canada is particularly pleased to see the Committee recognize the necessity of increasing supports for new farmers &#8211; an issue we, along with new farmers groups from across the country, have long advocated for (See our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foodsecurecanada.org\/new-farmers-are-future-of-food\">2016 Brief on Farm Renewal<\/a>).
