Emily Amon, an RA with the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/cross-sector-work\/student-pathways\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Pathways<\/a> working group, was recently profiled by\u00a0Random Acts of Green as a way of highlighting her Master&#8217;s research on community impact.<\/p>\n<p>An excerpt of the article is included below, and you can read the full piece <a href=\"https:\/\/raog.ca\/2018\/07\/23\/trentu-masters-candidate-emily-amon-studies-the-effectiveness-of-community-based-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h2>TrentU Master\u2019s Candidate Emily Amon studies the effectiveness of Community Based Research<\/h2>\n<p>Emily Amon is a passionate community-based researcher.<\/p>\n<p>She has completed THREE environmental science community research projects during her Bachelor of Environmental Sciences and Studies undergraduate degree at Trent.<\/p>\n<p>Her current project as a Masters of Sustainabilities Studies Candidate at Trent University is focused on community-based research. This type of research involves working with a diverse range of partners to help gather different perspectives, contribute expertise and share decision making.<\/p>\n<p>Emily is exploring how student research can be used to\u00a0<strong>drive community activism<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>influence sustainable community changes. \u00a0<\/strong>At the heart of all social and environmental movements, groups of people have worked together to achieve common goals.\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>It is important to understand the process\u00a0of how people band together to create meaningful changes.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Community groups with research needs are partnered with Trent students to complete community-based research projects through Trent\u2019s experiential education programs, facilitated by both U-Links Centre for Community Based Research (for projects in the Haliburton Region), and the Trent Community Research Centre (for projects in the Peterborough Region).<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Students have completed a wide variety of projects with far reaching impacts from:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Waste audits<\/strong>\u00a0at the landfills in Algonquin highlands that led to a\u00a0<em><strong>new recycling program<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Water quality<\/strong>\u00a0monitoring projects which have engaged cottagers and improved awareness of environmental concerns around their lakes<\/li>\n<li>The establishment of\u00a0<strong>community gardens<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0nature education programs<\/li>\n<li>Improving operations for the local\u00a0<strong>farmers markets<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Emily\u2019s research focuses on\u00a0<strong>what happens<\/strong><b>\u00a0to<\/b><b>\u00a0the community<\/b>\u00a0after the student completes the research and how positive changes continue in the area.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/raog.ca\/2018\/07\/23\/trentu-masters-candidate-emily-amon-studies-the-effectiveness-of-community-based-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the full piece here to find out more about Emily&#8217;s research<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CFICE Research Assistants (RAs) are making waves in community-based research!
