Project step is an initiative to help youth (grades 7-12) struggling with drug and substance abuse in the Ottawa region. Youth struggling with addiction are at high-risk for dropping out of school,  troubled relationships, criminality, mental health conditions, unemployment, and homelessness. Project step is an important part of ensuring more youth can achieve the healthy and balanced life all young people deserve.


This Call for Proposals seeks to identify talented researchers conducting thesis or dissertation research related to youth addictions in Ottawa. The research may focus on one or more of project step’s four susbtance abuse pillars: support, treatment, education and prevention.

Particular ares of interest of project step related to youth in Ottawa include:

  • Concurrent disorders and/or concurrent addictions
  • Non-medical use of prescription opioids and/or use of illicit opioids
  • Prevention and/or eduction at the middle school level
  • Non-mainstream school youth


LOIs may be applied for by the principal research the intention of allocating the funds to one or more graduate students under their supervision.

  • Graduate students do not need to be Canadian citizens, but must be candidates for a graduate degree or graduate school in Ottawa
  • The applying supervisor does not need to be a Canadian citizen but needs to be employed as a professional research or professor at a graduate school in Ottawa
    • Supervisor must be eligible to supervise graduate students and to hold Tri-Council funding at the University

Available Funding

Total amount available: $60,000 (4 x $15, 000)

  • Confirmed $30,000 in funding with potential of additional match of $30,000  through the Mitacs Accelerate program
  • Each grant is worth $15,000
    • $10,000 is allocated to the student and $5,000 for the research project costs
