Announcements

1) Transition plans for NSERC’s previous suite Research Partnership programs

Budget 2018 directed NSERC to consolidate its Research Partnership grants into a single grant program in an effort to modernize, simplify and improve the grants. As such, Alliance grants will consolidate Engage grants, Industrial Research Chairs, Connect grants, Strategic Partnership grants for Networks and Projects, Experience Awards, and Collaborative Research and Development grants.

Applications to the Collaborative Research and Development grants, as well as to the Engage and Engage Plus grants will be accepted until May 31, 2019.

All ongoing awards, as well as all new commitments made before the launch of Alliance grants will be honored until their completion under the terms and conditions of the original award.

All applications for grants in the programs that have been consolidated that were received before the respective program’s application deadline will be evaluated and adjudicated according to the original rules and criteria.

Visit the Program Transitions webpage and the FAQ page for more details.

2) SSHRC Open Research Area (ORA) for the Social Sciences: A new call in 2019

SSHRC is excited to announce its collaboration in the 6th Open Research Area (ORA) call alongside three European funding organizations: Agence nationale de la recherche in France; Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in Germany; and the Economic and Social Research Council in the United Kingdom. The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science is an associate partner.

ORA was created to strengthen international co-operation in the social sciences by funding high quality scientific research projects. The program started as an agreement between research funding agencies in France, Germany, the UK and The Netherlands in 2010.

This pre-call announcement is being issued to allow interested researchers to begin discussions with potential research partners ahead of the formal call for proposals. ORA is due to open in April 2019. The application window for proposals is set to last about three months, with a closing date expected in July 2019.

Proposals will be accepted for research in any area of the social sciences. In this round, proposals need to involve researchers from any three or more participating countries and be integrated across the participating countries. The research should make an original and significant contribution to current scientific knowledge.

Stay tuned for the formal call for proposals to be launched on the websites of the participating funding organizations. Details on the previous round can be found online.

4) CIHR Public Engagement: Survey, Forum and More

I am excited to let you know that today, CIHR is beginning our public engagement on our new strategic plan.

We are inviting the health research community to visit https://letstalk-cihr.ca/ to take our survey, join the discussion forum, or leave us a question. The online survey will be open until June 28, 2019.

If you have the time, we invite you to share the link to the online engagement with your networks and on your social media channels.

5) Canadian Space Agency Continues Health Research With Potential New Opportunity

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) posted an Advanced Notice yesterday for three potential Announcements of Opportunity (AO) as part of its Grants and Contributions Program in the area of health research.

The AO is part of the governments new Space Strategy for Canada’s civil space program and continues ongoing work by the agency in space health and innovation. The CSA said it intends to publish the AO’s in late spring this year.

According to agency the “intent of these AOs will be to provide financial support to researchers in Canadian Universities and post-secondary institutions to conduct science investigations that will lead to a better understanding of human spaceflight risks while contributing to improve remote medicine and health care benefits here on Earth.”

These are the three AO’s the CSA is considering;

Health and Life Sciences (HLS) Data and Sample Mining: Scientific analysis using existing data sets or biological samples generated from previous studies.

  • Maximum amount per project: up to $70,000.
  • Maximum duration of the project: up to one (1) year.

HLS Research Models: Non-human research models (examples: organoids, organ-on-a-chip, model organisms) for investigations of space-related health risks (e.g. radiation, medical countermeasures) to expand research approaches.

  • Maximum amount per project: up to $150,000
  • Maximum duration of the project: up to two (2) years

Human Analog Studies: Human-subject space analog studies that reproduce one or more aspects of the space environment, such as variable gravity, inactivity, physiological fluid shifts, isolation, or confinement.

  • Maximum amount per project: up to $200,000
  • Maximum duration of the project: up to two (2) years
