In Winter 2023, CU’s English Department is offering a new course:

Studies in Publishing: Editing and Producing a Literary Magazine

This experiential learning course will be a hub for the design, editing, and production of a new literary magazine, Sumac Literary Magazine, connected with Carleton’s Creative Writing program. Seminar participants will work in teams to design and implement a production schedule, assess and edit submissions, collaborate with authors, and promote the magazine. Students will gain or practice their skills in digital editing software such as WordPress. The digital edition of the magazine will be accompanied by print supplements produced in MacOdrum Library’s Book Arts Lab. Students will gain hands-on experience of letter press printing and other traditional print-making techniques by producing broadsides or chapbooks that will promote and accompany the digital edition of the magazine.

Students enrolled in this course will have a chance to help shape the pilot edition of Sumac Literary Magazine. We hope to conclude the course with a magazine launch, organized and hosted by seminar participants, featuring readings by contributors. It will be helpful for students registered in this course to have access to their own laptop computer.

Print supplementary material will be produced in the MacOdrum Library Book Arts Lab to accompany Sumac Literary Magazine

The call for submissions is now closed. The inaugural edition of Sumac Literary Magazine will launch in April, with a brand new website.
