SUMMARY:Judging the Jury: The Influence of Extralegal Characteristics on Mock Juror Decision-Making
DESCRIPTION:Professor Evelyn Maeder is participating in the Research Day’s colloquium held in conjunction with the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice.  She will be presenting the following topic:



A large body of literature in the United States has evaluated the decision-making of American jurors and mock jurors, but very little research exists regarding jurors in Canada.  This colloquium will highlight some of the recent work that I have done in this area, studying the effects of extralegal influences (e.g., defendant race, victim attractiveness, pre-existing attitudes)on mock jurors.  The talk will also outline some of the differences between the jury systems of Canada and the United States, and the implications of these differences for research on juror decision-making.
