In this workshop, you will learn about Carleton’s Academic Integrity Policy. This workshop is designed to help you understand the importance of following Academic Integrity Standards, as well as focusing on what students should do to prevent plagiarism by following ethical conduct. Additionally, common errors that result in academic violations will be highlighted, followed by various strategies and tools that can be used to maintain academic integrity.

This workshop will introduce you to the important roles of editing and proofreading in the writing process. Specifically, you will learn about the differences between editing and proofreading, higher- and lower-order writing concerns, and strategies to critically assess your own writing.

In this workshop, you will learn about strategies that can help you improve your academic writing skills, as well as be introduced to some writing fundamentals that will assist you to develop stronger written work.

In this workshop, you will explore various strategies that can support you in getting started with any academic writing task. This workshop highlights some key strategies to assist in understanding the assignment, creating an outline, and developing a thesis statement to guide the flow of the assignment. Additionally, secondary sources and note-taking strategies will be discussed.

This workshop will introduce you to strategies to improve your skills and abilities when writing for academic purposes. Specifically, you will learn about different stages of the writing process, and ways to determine the necessary academic audience and language. Additionally, the main types of academic essays a student will encounter will be explored.

Adjusting to reading academic texts can be difficult. This workshop is designed to show you ways of improving your reading skills at any level. You will learn about different readings you may come across, what you should be looking for in the readings, and tips for reading difficult material. At the end of this workshop, you will learn valuable strategies for reading academic texts and ways of organizing and understanding the information you read.

With such hectic schedules, it’s sometimes hard to balance all the things we need to do. This workshop will help you to understand how to manage your time and different commitments while maintaining an effective balance. You will also learn to adjust to changes in your schedule and how to deal with the unexpected.

Have you ever felt like you weren’t capable of succeeding in a course? Have you ever felt like you were putting in the effort but not getting the results? This workshop is for any student at any level who wants to become a more strategic, effective, and efficient learner. This workshop will explore learning theory, how your mindset can contribute to your success, and how increasing your metacognition will help you perform better. In addition, the workshop will outline tangible learning strategies grounded in research that you can incorporate into your academic routine to succeed in any course. Attend this workshop to learn how to study smarter and achieve academic success!

This workshop will introduce you to the concept of critical thinking and the important role it plays when reading and writing for academic purposes. During this workshop, you will learn how to read and think critically about your course material. You will also learn how to develop your own thoughts and opinions about this material to meet your professors’ expectations.

Do you have a presentation to do in any of your classes? This workshop can help you create and deliver effective presentations. Some of the skills that you will develop in this workshop include: Organizing the content of your presentation, tips for delivering the presentation, and strategies for using designing your materials effectively. Overall, this workshop is aimed at helping you through the stressful parts of presenting and exploring ways to make the experience a more pleasant one.

Do you like lectures that use visual aids? Do you enjoy hearing new information or reading it? Do you prefer to work independently or in a group? Everyone has different learning preferences that can affect the way they prefer to engage with the information. This workshop is designed to help you reflect upon the ways that you enjoy learning and determine how you can use these preferences to your advantage.

In this workshop, you will first take a procrastination quiz to determine the severity of your procrastination habits. With this understanding, the workshop then delves into different strategies and techniques for avoiding procrastination and ways to make the most of your time. At the end of this workshop, you will have a better understanding of your tendency to procrastinate and how to overcome that challenge.

Academic motivation comes in ebbs and flows. As a result, we may need to employ different strategies at different phases of our life and academic journey. Whether your motivation levels are currently high, low, or somewhere in-between, this workshop will introduce you to some of the different types of motivation, as well as some approaches to help you self-regulate. You will also learn about effective strategies that you can use to build, maintain, and mobilize your academic motivation at any point throughout your academic career.

Have you ever completed a lecture or reading only to find that you don’t remember what you’ve just learned? This is a common challenge that students face. As soon as we learn something, we start to forget it. This workshop is aimed at helping you develop strategies for reviewing your lectures and readings to improve your memory and concentration.

What are the most important details to write down when taking notes? What should you be listening for in lecture? These are common questions that students have when it comes to taking good notes in their lectures or from their readings. This workshop will present you with note-taking methods that will help you save time organizing and reviewing your notes. In addition, you will learn what to listen for in lectures and what information to write down from your readings.

Have you ever been in a situation where you weren’t sure how or where to seek help? Sometimes, it can be challenging to ask for help or identify that help is even needed.  This workshop will explore the importance of help-seeking behaviours, barriers that could prevent or delay someone from asking for help, as well as strategies for seeking support. Finally, you will be introduced to some of the many resources and supports that are available to you as a student at Carleton University.

Are you stressed out about your upcoming exams? Do you ever find yourself cramming for a test a few days before it? Then this workshop is for you! This workshop helps you identify strategies to study and prepare for your exams. You will also become familiar with the test-taking procedures at Carleton and how you can best apply your knowledge on exam day.

Are you having trouble managing your time and balancing all of your commitments? This workshop helps you identify what difficulties you may encounter with managing your time and provide you with some guidance regarding the different strategies you can use to effectively manage your time. By the end of the workshop, you will gain a better understanding of how to manage your time and receive tips for getting started!

Being able to work well in groups is a valuable skill to develop and use both inside and outside the classroom. In this workshop, you will learn the philosophies and advantages of group work, as well as an overview of group dynamics and the stages of group development. You will also learn skills for effectively working in groups, dealing with conflict, and giving feedback. Overall, this workshop will help you to learn the skills to make the most out of each group work experience.
