Climate Change: Can We Win This? Be Honest

Our daily news is filled with reports of severe weather-related events and disasters. Earth is getting warmer while the world remains cool to taking the necessary actions to curb carbon emissions. Most of us now believe climate change is real. But shrinking denial has given way to growing despair. Can we win this fight? Honestly?

Dalton McGuinty, a lawyer, served as Premier of Ontario from 2003 – 2013. Among his environmental initiatives, Premier McGuinty took the lead by closing Ontario’s coal plants, making the province the first jurisdiction in North America to fully eliminate coal as a source of electricity generation. He also created the Greater Toronto Area Greenbelt, which, at nearly 2 million acres, is the world’s largest permanently protected green space in an urban setting. The McGuinty government was also Canada’s leader in promoting renewable energy, banning the use of cosmetic pesticides, introducing over 50 new air standards, and passing the Clean Water Act. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the University of Toronto School of Public Policy and Governance as well as Carleton University’s School of Public Policy and Administration.
