Graham Campbell has extensive experience in the energy sector in Canada based on previous positions in the private sector, in federal departments and regulatory agencies, in energy consulting, and in public policy research.

His career started in the oil and gas industry in Calgary in the exploration division of Shell Canada Resources.  In the federal departments of Natural Resources Canada, Graham managed the federal government’s program in energy research and development, working with a dozen federal departments and many companies across Canada.  At the National Energy Board, he was responsible for the assessment of energy supply in support of the Board’s regulation of pipelines, natural gas exports, and exploration activities in the North.  Most recently, Graham has consulted in energy technology and innovation, and has undertaken public policy research in clean electricity, clean transportation, and carbon markets.  Graham has collaborated with officials in government, industry and universities across Canada on energy technology priorities and fostering R&D investments.

Internationally, he has served as the chair of the International Energy Agency’s energy technology committee which guides global collaboration in energy technology amongst the twenty-eight member countries and emerging economies.  He has also co-chaired the International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy and has collaborated with colleagues in the United States and Mexico on development of new energy technologies.

“I see sustainable energy as a pathway of opportunity towards maximizing the major benefits contributed by the energy sector to Canada’s economy in a way that both supports sound development of Canada’s resources while minimizing energy’s impact on the environment.  The combination within Sustainable Energy Carleton of engineering leadership in development and application of new technologies together with leading-edge policy research affords a unique opportunity to bring technology and policy together towards achieving sustainability.  SEC will help position Carleton as a global leader in research and in teaching programs in sustainable energy.  I look forward to tackling the challenges of accelerating practical, profitable and affordable sustainable energy solutions”.
