On Friday, May 22, 2026, the Carleton Sustainable Energy Research Centre <\/a>(CSERC) hosted an expert roundtable and seminar discussion featuring Dr. Timur G\u00fcl, Chief Energy Technology Officer<\/a> at the International Energy Agency (IEA)<\/a>. The event brought together scholars, students, and policy experts to examine emerging challenges and opportunities shaping global energy transitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The morning roundtable\u00a0convened\u00a0representatives from a range of interdisciplinary initiatives, including Efficiency Canada<\/a>, the Energy Modelling Hub<\/a>,\u00a0Re.Climate<\/a>, the Sustainability Transitions Research Network<\/a>, and the Transition Accelerator<\/a>. Participants discussed the technological, economic, and governance dimensions of sustainable energy transitions, with a particular emphasis on industrial decarbonization,\u00a0electricity systems transformation, and policy coordination across sectors.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. G\u00fcl\u2019s seminar discussion focused on findings from the IEA\u2019s\u00a0Energy Technology Perspectives 2026<\/em><\/a>, highlighting the rapid expansion of global clean energy technology markets and the growing importance of manufacturing capacity\u00a0and supply chain resilience.\u00a0The presentation\u00a0examined\u00a0trade-offs surrounding\u00a0the concentration of clean energy technology\u00a0supply chains in China, which has accelerated\u00a0the diffusion of\u00a0critical clean technologies\u00a0but also\u00a0raised\u00a0mounting geopolitical concerns over market dominance. Discussions explored the economic security implications of supply chain concentration,\u00a0the place Canada might occupy in unfolding transitions,\u00a0as well as the importance of strategic international partnerships and\u00a0supply chain\u00a0diversification.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across both sessions, participants\u00a0emphasized\u00a0the importance of interdisciplinary\u00a0research\u00a0<\/s>\u00a0and\u00a0collaboration\u00a0in supporting efforts to realize\u00a0sustainable\u00a0energy systems. As CSERC Co-Chair, Professor Ahmed Abdulla<\/a>\u00a0stressed\u00a0that\u00a0\u201caddressing the complexity of energy transitions requires sustained exchange across disciplines,\u00a0where insights from engineering, policy, and the social sciences can be brought together to envision and help put in motion effective transition pathways\u201d.\u00a0Professor\u00a0Daniel Rosenbloom<\/a>, Ivey Research Chair in Sustainability Transitions and fellow CSERC\u00a0Co-chair,\u00a0added\u00a0that \u201cCSERC exists to convene researchers, policymakers, and practitioners across\u00a0domains, creating a shared space to advance knowledge and translate it into\u00a0actionable insights to accelerate the\u00a0energy transition\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
