{"id":4914,"date":"2016-09-10T13:41:03","date_gmt":"2016-09-10T17:41:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/csids\/?p=4914"},"modified":"2016-09-14T14:12:04","modified_gmt":"2016-09-14T18:12:04","slug":"questioning-the-relevance-of-operation-nanook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/csids\/2016\/questioning-the-relevance-of-operation-nanook\/","title":{"rendered":"Questioning the Relevance of Operation Nanook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Higginbotham, former ADM for several federal departments and CIGI and Carleton fellow, comments on the relevance of Operation Nanook &#8211; one of the military&#8217;s annual Arctic exercises.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"start\">Every year in <\/span> the summer, hundreds of soldiers descend upon Canada\u2019s northern towns and participate in Operation Nanook. For those unfamiliar with Nanook, it has been happening since 2007 and is one the largest sovereignty operations in Canada\u2019s\u00a0North.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s operation is happening in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, as well as Haines Junction, Yukon, and Whitehorse, Yukon. It started August 21 and came to a close on September 2, and included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forces.gc.ca\/en\/operations-canada-north-america-recurring\/op-nanook.page\" target=\"_blank\">three <\/a>international military observers: France, the United States and the United\u00a0Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Canadian Government, Operation Nanook has several objectives, including \u201c[to] assert Canada\u2019s sovereignty over its northernmost regions\u201d and \u201cto enhance the Canadian Armed Forces\u2019 ability to operate in Arctic conditions.\u201d This yearly operation is an opportunity to test and train Canada\u2019s military in a northern\u00a0capacity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsdeeply.com\/arctic\/articles\/2016\/09\/05\/analysis-questioning-the-relevance-of-canadas-operation-nanook?utm_source=Arctic+Deeply&amp;utm_campaign=7dac9a1872-Arctic_Deeply_Weekly_Update_09_109_9_2016&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_6049fe392e-7dac9a1872-117392853\">For more of Mieke Coppes&#8217; article see&#8230;.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Higginbotham, former ADM for several federal departments and CIGI and Carleton fellow, comments on the relevance of Operation Nanook &#8211; one of the military&#8217;s annual Arctic exercises.
