We will engage both with terms that begin with the prefix “de” (e.g. decolonizing, declassifying, de-centering, dehiscence) and with the complex relationship between “transnational,” “transcultural,” and “translocal” critical frameworks.

The workshop will have two main parts:

Annotations: As part of a larger research-creation project between the CTCA and the Institute for Cultural Inquiry, Berlin, Rebecca Dolgoy will conduct an annotations session in which participants will be guided through a process of annotating photos of sculptural works produced during a recent workshop in Berlin. The aim of the overarching project is to investigate the different resonances of the prefix “de” in multiple locations.

Discussion: We will use words like “transnational,” “transcultural,” and “translocal” in our own critical contexts to denote ideas and concepts that need critical frameworks that move beyond and between national borders. We might also use works like “cosmopolitan” or “planetary humanism.” But these words do not always easily traverse disciplinary understandings. While we won’t solve this challenge in our workshop, we hope to start to communicate across disciplines and academic traditions in order to help clarify these terms. The discussion will be led by Rebecca Dolgoy, Jerzy Elżanowski, and Daniel McNeil. It will open by looking at two texts, which are available through the MacOdrum Library (see below). We will then move outwards to a more general discussion of terms through a guided activity.

Readings:

V. We aim to bolster the Centre’s mandate to bring together scholars and students working with transnational approaches to studies in the humanities through regular, informal workshops, roundtables, film screenings, and discussion groups. The Friday Table seeks to foster collegiality and promote student-led research.
