The pandemic has provided us with an opportunity to experiment with several types of flexible work arrangements, including remote work; however, the pandemic has also highlighted the importance of the on-campus presence of staff and faculty for the optimal functioning of the University. Given the variety of work done at Carleton, not every position fits neatly into a flexible work arrangement. This is important to keep in mind and something we will learn about in more concrete ways throughout the fall semester.
The university is taking a phased approach to developing ongoing flexible work arrangements. The fall semester is Phase 1 and focuses on the necessary flexibility to meet public heath requirements. This will provide us with a learning opportunity (Phase 2) that we can apply to our post-pandemic future (Phase 3).
