On Tuesday, March 30, 2021 the Faculty of Science and Carleton University Institute for Data Science will host the university’s seventh annual celebration of all things data, Data Day 7.1: AI: What’s Next? and Everything Smart.

We invite you to join us for this full-day free virtual event, which will include panel sessions and research vignettes, a graduate student poster competition, and networking opportunities.

Data Day 7.1 will bring together experts from government, academia and industry to explore the latest developments in data science and analytics research, and discuss topics related to this year’s themes:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Data governance
  • Smart technology
  • Big Data
  • COVID-19

Call for Abstracts!

On behalf of the Data Day organizing team, we invite you to submit an abstract to present your research at Data Day 7.1: AI: What’s Next? and Everything Smart!

The deadline for abstract submission is March 11, 2021, and can be sent directly to odscience@carleton.ca along with the student consent form.

Please see the guidelines for more information on posters and abstracts.

Selected presenters will be invited to upload a digital version of their poster (PDF or PPT format) to the event space prior to the event, along with the option of joining the virtual poster fair and presenting/answering questions live. During Data Day, attendees and judges will be able to virtually visit all posters and submit questions to the presenters through the chat function on each poster page.

At the end of the event, the winners of the poster competition will be announced. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top posters!

Data Day 7.1 Explores AI and Everything Smart

Carleton University’s seventh annual Data Day was virtually attended by more than 500 people! This year’s event, held March 30, explored topics in artificial intelligence, smart technologies and data governance, and included presentations by big data experts from academia and industry, as well as a grad student poster competition.

Data Day 7.1 Poster Fair Results

Congratulations to Carleton University’s Data Day 7.1 poster fair winners! This year, the competition was divided into three categories: Critical Data Studies, Introduction to Data Science and General.

Coming in first place in the Critical Data Studies category was Journalism and Communications PhD student Anna-Lena Theus with her poster, Privacy Compliance of Smart Streetlights: A case study of the city of Yellowknife’s smart city challenge proposal.

In the Introduction to Data Science categories, Alexander Lane from the School of Information Technology and Julia Conzon from the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies received the first-place prize with their poster, Towards evaluating the built-environment: a hybrid approach for identifying building entrance accessibility.

In the General category, Master of Applied Science and Computer Engineering student, Joe Samuel, received the top score with his poster, A data-driven approach for designing secure systems.
