The Carleton University Institute for Data Science is pleased to announce that it has hired two new assistant professors in the School of Computer Science.<\/a><\/p>\n

Majid Komeili, Assistant Professor in the School of Computer Science<\/h2>\n

Before joining Carleton, Majid was a postdoctoral fellow at University of Toronto working jointly with Department of Computer Science, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and Vector Institute under supervision of Dr. Frank Rudzicz<\/a>. He is also affiliated with Age-well<\/a>. Majid received his Ph.D. from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Toronto under supervision of Dr. Dimitrios Hatzinakos<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Research Areas
\n<\/strong>Majid’s research interests are in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Signal\/image\/video processing, Speech\/Language processing and Computer Vision. More specifically, Majid is interested in Assistive Technologies for early detection of Alzheimer\u2019s disease using speech and language, dimension reduction and feature selection, deep neural networks, expression recognition and affective computing, analysis of the physiological signals (EEG, ECG, ASSR, TEOAE), Countermeasures for Biometric spoofing based on physiological signals.<\/p>\n

Prospective Students
\n<\/strong>Majid has different projects he’s looking to admit Ph.D. and Master students for at the moment.<\/p>\n

Ahmed El-Roby, Assistant Professor in the School of Computer Science<\/h2>\n

Ahmed received his PhD from the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo in 2018. There, he was part of the Data Systems group. He earned a Master’s degree from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in 2011, and his bachelor’s degree from Alexandria University. Ahmed also worked as an intern in the Carnegie Mellon Database Group, as a research associate at Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), and as a software developer at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center.<\/p>\n

Research Areas
\n<\/strong>Ahmed is interested in various data integration topics that include but not limited to data acquisition, cleaning, wrangling, entity linking, schema matching and mapping, querying heterogeneous data, involving users in the data integration loop. Ahmed is also interested in question answering over structured data, and mining for interesting facts in knowledge bases.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Ahmed is currently looking for highly motivated Master’s and PhD students.<\/p>\n
