The Book activity creates a multi-page, book-like resource with chapters and subchapters. Books can contain media files or text, and are useful for breaking down lengthy passages of information. The book module is not interactive. As always, ensure that you review the copyright information and guidelines posted at http://www.library.carleton.ca/copyright.

Other uses/features include:

  • Reading material for individual modules of study
  • Staff departmental handbooks
  • Student showcase portfolios
  • Importing websites into Book modules.
  • Printing book resources or specific chapters
  • Linking to forums
  • Incorporating flash movies and other multimedia
NOTE: The book resource is not necessary if you are merely uploading a long pdf file.  For that, simply upload a file).

To Add a Book:

  1. Log in to cuLearn using your MyCarletonOne credentials.
  2. Click on your course link.
  3. Under the Add a Resource drop-down menu, choose Book.
  4. Under General, provide a Name and Description for the book.
  5. Under Appearance, you have the option to adjust the Chapter Formatting and Style of Navigation.
    • The Chapter Formatting options are:
      • None – chapter and subchapter titles are not formatted at all, use if you want to define special numbering styles. For example letters: in chapter title type “A First Chapter”, “A.1 Some Subchapter”,…
      • Numbers (default) – chapters and subchapters are numbered (1, 1.1, 1.2, 2, …)
      • Bullets – subchapters are indented and displayed with bullets.
      • Indented – subchapters are indented.
    • The Style of Navigation options are:
      • Images – Icons are used for navigation.
      • Text – Chapter titles are used for navigation.
  6. To immediately add content/chapters, click Save and Display.  Alternatively, click Save and Return to Course to add content at a later date.

NOTE: If you click Save and Return to course, you will automatically be prompted to add a new chapter/content the first time you click on the link to your book on your course page.

To add a chapter:

  1. Log in to cuLearn using your MyCarletonOne credentials.
  2. Click on your course link.
  3. Click on the link to your book on your course page.
  4. Go to the Table of Contents block on the top-right side of the page and click the plus (+) sign to add a new chapter.                                                       
  5. On the Add a New Chapter page, provide the Chapter Title and Content for the first chapter. You can choose sub-chapter if you wish to divide your chapter into several smaller sections.
  6. After entering your information, click Save changes.
