Bonus marks are grades that are above and beyond regular course marking.  Adding bonus marks is considered an advanced feature in cuLearn.  If you are uncomfortable with making complicated changes to your gradebook, please contact the EDC (edtech@carleton.ca) for help.

Assigning bonus marks in a course can be broken into 3 overall steps:

  1. Creating an overall category for all regular course marks, called “Initial Course Total
  2. Creating a Bonus Marks grade item worth the assigned bonus mark value
  3. Changing the calculation settings in cuLearn
NOTE: These instructions assume that you have already set up your gradebook and that all grade items add to 100.  If you need help with setting up your gradebook or want to discuss how to make it add to 100, please contact the EDC at edtech@carleton.ca.

To create an Initial Course Total category:

  1. Log in to cuLearn using your MyCarletonOne credentials.
  2. Click on your course link.
  3. In the Navigation Menu on the left side of the page, click Grades.
  4. Click the Setup tab.
  5. Under Setup > Gradebook Setup, click the Add a Category button below the Gradebook setup table.  
  6. Name your category Initial Course Total.     
  7. Under Category Total, add the title, “Initial Course Total” to the Item info field so you can distinguish between the Course Total before adding Bonus Marks and after Bonus Marks have been added.
  8. Place all of your course content inside the Category called Initial Course Total in the following way:

a) Under the Select column, click the check boxes beside each grade item.

b) Click the Move selected items to button located below your grade items.

c) Select the Initial Course Total category.  Grade items will automatically move into the Initial Course Total category.

To create a Bonus Marks grade item:

  1. Log in to cuLearn using your MyCarletonOne credentials.
  2. Click on your course link.
  3. In the Navigation Menu on the left side of the page, click Grades.
  4. Click the Setup tab.
  5. In the Gradebook Setup tab, click the Add grade item button below the Gradebook setup table.
  6. Under Grade item, click show more… to expand a full list of settings options.
  7. Enter the item name as Bonus Marks.
  8. Add the title “Bonus Marks” to the Item info box as well (follow the same steps you took when creating the Initial Course Total category above). 
  9. In the Maximum grade box, enter the maximum number of bonus marks a student can achieve.
  10. Click Save changes.
NOTE: You may have to click on the Category total tab in order to reveal the Item info. box.

To change the calculation settings in your gradebook:

You now need to change the aggregation method of your gradebook to “Natural”, then enable the Extra Credit setting.

To change the aggregation method:

  1. Log in to cuLearn using your MyCarletonOne credentials.
  2. Click on your course link.
  3. In the Navigation Menu on the left side of the page, click Grades.
  4. Click the Setup tab.
  5. Under Setup, click the Gradebook setup tab.
  6. Click on the Edit drop-down menu under the Actions column to the right of your course name.
  7. At the top of the page, under the “Category name” box, click on Show more…
  8. Beside Aggregation, select Natural.  
  9. Click Save changes.

To enable the extra credit setting:

  1. Under Setup, click the Gradebook setup tab.
  2. To the right of the Bonus Marks Category, click on the Edit drop-down menu (in the “Actions” column).
  3. Select Edit settings.
  4. Near the bottom of the page, click on the Parent category tab to expand the menu.
  5. Check the box for Extra credit.
  6. Click Save changes.
NOTE: Make sure your Course total still adds up to 100.  Check to make sure the Bonus Marks total has a + symbol (indicating it is for Extra credit).
