To add a Group Self-Selection activity and create the groups for students to register in

  1. Create groups using the method described here.
  2. Create a grouping of the groups using the method described here.
  3. On the course homepage, go to the topic/section in which you would like to add the Group self-selection activity.
  4. Click Add an activity 
  5. In the drop-down menu, select Group self-selection.
  6. In the Adding a new Group self selection page, enter the following:
    • Enter a name for the Group self-selection activity.
    • Choose your optional settings (i.e. Open until, Max members per group) for Group self-selection,  being sure to:
      1. Select the grouping you just created in the Select groups from grouping dropbox.           
      2. Under General Permissions, uncheck the Participants can create groups option (This will automatically uncheck Participants can set the name of new groups and Participants can set and edit group description).     
  7. Click Save and return to course.

To add a Group Self-Selection activity where students create the groups

  1. Create a grouping of the groups using the method described here.
  2. Go to the main course page and using the Add an activity drop-down menu, click Group self-selection.
  3. Enter a name for the Group self-selection activity.
  4. Choose your optional settings, being sure to:
    • Select the grouping you just created in the Select groups from grouping dropbox.
    • Ensure that you keep the Participants can create groups and Participants can set the name of new groups options selected.                                    
  5. Click Save and return to course.

The Group Self-Selection activity link will appear under your chosen topic on your course page.
